Subject: A dumb question IP: Logged
Message: I was backing out of my friends driveway and my right rear wheel got stuck on some ice, the left wheel was on solid ground. When my right wheel spun the left wheel didn't do anything and my friend had to give me a push to get it out of the ice. When one wheel spins shoulden't the other one still move?

Message: no, you don't have a limited slip rear end.
if you want both to move, you need to buy one and have it installed.

Message: You have what is called an "open" differential.
The lsd rear as mentioned above was an option.

Message: Yeah...like everyone said, it's an open differential. Quite a great design huh? As soon as one wheel gets stuck, you're SOL. Can't wait til I can afford limited slip...lol. Any of you know the reason why many vehicles come standard with an open differential?
Here's another scenario... this has to do with my four-wheeler, not my dak. My four-wheeler has a solid rear axle...works great except for sharp turns or if I really get on the gas on snow/ice. I have a Yamaha Big Bear 400 4x4. Their design for 4wd definitely has to win a Darwin award... if you get stuck in the mud all is cool, push the button and you can get out with 4wd. Try to go up the edge of the mudhole and you get stuck. Why? Because Yamaha designed their 4wd with an open differential... as soon as your wheel starts to slip, the other one quits spinning and now you are stuck. Yamaha only makes I think one four-wheeler (Grizzly) that actually has a 4wd LOCK... talk about shi tty or what? Anyway, yeah...just had to mention that while under a discussion of open differential...

Message: You kinda answered your own question GB "works great except for sharp turns or if I really get on the gas on snow/ice". Open rears are a bit safer on slippery traction situations for folks who aren't above average drivers. If you have an open differential and you turn a corner on a slippery surface while applying gas only one wheel will tend to break loose while the other keeps it forward traction. On the other hand if you were in the same situation with limited slip both wheels would tend to break traction and the rear would lose control.
There also cheaper for the manufacturer to install and I'll bet that's most of the reason there are so many.
Never forget years ago I saw a lady in a TransAm slide right off an off ramp that curved and went upwards. It was a rainy day and she gave it a bit too much go pedal. When I stopped to pull her out of the ditch she said "I dunno what the hell happened, one min I was going fine and the next I was sliding out of control just trying to give it gas to go up this hill".

Message: Thanks Diane, I was going to say something to "dingle berry" but i saw your post. This is my first truck so of corse I'm going to have some stupid questions, but I will learn eventually. People shouldn't be so arrogant because they are older and have more experience.

Message: What's a good place to get a limited slip rear/posi...and about how much should it cost? Any good brands, etc...
I get really annoyed and one tire spinning...and I find it more natural to control the rear end kicking out because of me racing MX on an ATV and everything. Also, sometimes its fun/benificial to be able to do it when its needed.

Message: here is a neat trick when you get an open differential vehicle stuck just like the 01-dak-dude did. try what amouts to "power brakeing" only with the emergency brake and without a lot of brake, just enough to put resistance on the spinning wheel. If it is done just right, the resistance of the brake is enough to cause enough load on that half of the axel that the other half will start spinning the other wheel enough to get you going. Yeah I know a lot of you will say no way, but it got my wife out of a snow drift last week. I talked her through it on the cell phone and in almost no time she was on her way. Try it in a ice covered empty parking lot some time!

Message: another dumb question to which i know the answere.
Why do redneck's end up in ditches?
The answer is simple. part-time 4wd. our trucks are this AWD is full-time 4wd. the differance, inter-axel differential. yep it's got three. normally it is a vicious coupler but any who.
I thought you all might like to know how a diff works both open and lsd.
The theory is simple let the outer wheel turn faster when cornering.
The power flow: Open diff
driveshaft to yoke.
yoke to pinion gear.
pinion gear to ring gear.
ring gear to case.
case to pinion shaft.
pinion shaft to spyder gears.
spyder gears to axel shafts.
LSD
the exact same cept the side gears have clutches that are spring loaded in the applied position. They don't have enough force to engage when Limited slip is not needed. They engage when this force of the springs is combined with gear spreading force(gears in mesh try to push away from each other). thus locking the side gears to the case.
as far a LSD being better there are arguments.
The e-brake will equalize the load on each wheel and thereby give you LSD.
LSD does not handle better it handels worse.
LSD helps on hard accel.
You decide.
if ya want to know how anything else works just ask.
