Message: 160 degree t-stat is a bad idea in a computer controlled vehicle. The computer is designed to make optimum power at 184 degrees. If you want to put in a cooler t-stat then go with a 180 any thing else will only hurt performance.

Message: Bad idea unless you're supercharged or running nitrous...then, it's questionable.
I run a 160 in my V6 but did notice my fuel economy suffer slightly.
As for the colder temp making it run better, that's the IAT Sensor...not the T'stat. (We've proved that one already.) ;)
The Magnum engines make their best power at 182-185 degrees. Running a 160 may, in some cases, trip the MIL (Check engine light) - Engine temperature too cold for too long.

Message: Ok well the oe temp for a dakota is 192/195 temp thermasta. And the reason the truck runs better when its cold is simply the air it takes in not the engin temp. Its the same idea of ram air. The colder the air, the more air molcules u can take in which burnes fuel better which inturn gives more power. If u run a colder thermostat it can cause all cindes of problemes like excelleration problems and bad fuel economy.

Message: Hey. My 1990 v6 has a few mods. K&N, headers, flowmaster duals, Jacobs ing., bla bla bla. I run a 180 deg T stat. But my engine temp never gets over 1/4 to 1/3 on the dash. Is this hurten my performance? I also live in Fla so summers are HOT HOT HOT. But whats the deal.

Message: Joe, Sometimes the factory temp gauges are not the most accurate things in the world. If your think the temp may not be up where it should be, install a after market gauge an see what it really is. Some shops have a gauge that is used in place of the radiator cap to check the temp of the coolant returning to the radiator. Check with you local shops. They may have one.

Message: Emissions system requires a certain level. 160 deg may be too low and fail test, trigger the check engine light, and use more gas. Other than that it is not critical. Nothing will break or burn-up. The computer may (or WILL at that low a temp) move in and out of closed-loop affecting other functions, though.

Mine seems to have failed (engine won't go up to temp since radiator blew up and was replaced).

Message: actually, not getting code, engine just not getting warm, temp gauge not rising off bottom, heater not generating warm air -- in older vehicles this used to be symptomatic of a thermostat stuck open. I just can't locate the thing (and hate to start disassembly just to hunt for it.)

Message: Theres a reason for bad gas mileage for the 160 thermo because ur engine is not warmed up and when it thinks its not warmed up it will put more fuel into your engie and give it a rich run thus lower gas mileage and it does this indefintely

Message: I noticed my temp gage not running as high as normal. Truck seemed to be running fine. After several hours of driving the radiator cap wasn't hot as well as the lower radiator hose. Upper hose was hot. I just replaced water pump a few months ago and I hear a squealing sound. I replaced thermostat today but still doing same thing. Does this sound liked a clogged water pump. Maybe some debri in the system. I am going to try a flush on the radiator. Does anyone have aan idea. Thanks James! I have a 99 dakota v6.

Message: Make sure cooling system is full after repairs. Sometimes they get air in them. Makes heater cold and hoses may be cold, gauge may say cold but the engine is hot.
160 stat may cause engine to stay in open loop as stated above. This is bad for economy and emissions and should set a code, but it may run faster.
One reason many engines run a little better before they warm up completely is that the ERG valve is closed (on engines so equiped).

Message: Just to clarify that.
The computer is looking for at least 170 degree's
or it will remain in open loop and not run as
good as it could.
If you do get the running to cold to long code the
computer will go into a limp mode and run on set
tables, not off the learnd curves it has stored.
If this happens the best thing you can do is fix
the prob and do a hard reset to clear the code
