Subject: RE: 160 DEGREE THERMOSTAT? IP: Logged
Message: I have a '89 dak w/ V6 (RWD). I have an idea why this is so! When you buy a new, high flow intake or exhaust system, you have a higher air-to-fuel ratio, causing your engine to run hotter. Therefore, you buy a lower temp thermostat. If you buy the JET stage II preformance chip, it reccomends that you buy a lower temp thermostat because it will change your timing and cause your engine to run hotter. Plus, this chip is preset to work on 160 or 180 degree stats.
Do not buy these things when you are running a plain stock engine, try them after you did some mods that increase airflow. The 160 degree stat is way too low for some stock engines.
I couldnt wait till I got my new high-flo muffler and one of those round chrome air cleaners, so I made a homemade mod. My own air cleaner from a few spare parts here and there. I can hear the air gush into my little v6 tbi motor, and I noticed a few more HP's with the filter alone. But I noticed in the morings the engine heated up very, very quickly, too.
I would recommend getting some preformance parts to balance things out or replacing the stat with a higher temp one. Hope I was of help.

Message: Ok Bernd I think you should guide me a little I have been running a 160 thermo for a bout 6 months now and I have noticed nothing but improvment in power and fuel economy but I have done a mildly modified V6. Pulleys, Intake, Flowmaster, TB spacer, fi hlow cat, 48mm TB from Hughs engines, 1:7 ROller ROckers, and that is about it...oh yeah I have removed the clutch fan and added electric fans duals to be exact, and SUperchips. Why can't I use a 160 will it screw up anything? no Check engine light yet!! Thanks Jeff

Message: blkqcsport, what year is your truck? i bet if you check codes you get something like a P1284. which is engine running too cold for too long. if you don't somethings up. i have an '00 qc sport removed clutch fan, v8 tb, blah, blah and as soon as october comes i start getting that code and mileage goes down 1-2 mpg.
but, that's the beauty of these dak's no 2 react the same to the same mods.

Message: 220 degree t-stat????
The reason for the lower temp stat is to make the engine cooler, so the computer will richen the fuel mixture.
better exhaust will lean the mixture but the O2 sensor will see this and the computer will compensate.

Message: WOW
flowing more makes it run hot, I Don't think so
If the flow is increased the o2 will increase the
fuel if it does run hot you have problems with
o2
a 180 thermo will advance timing and add more
fuel yes but the ratio will remain the same
The 180 only in warmer areas where it does not
get below 30 degrees, run the rg stant 195 it
will run 185 the org thermo is a metered design
and a full flow 18 will run cold anything below
170 will trip code running to cold to long
The thermostat is located on the intake manifold
not in the bottom hose LOL
And you do not need to run the 180 thermo with
a stage 2 chip or use premium fuel they are
not that agresive a small fuel and timing to
burn it
they help with mild mods
cold air intake
low restriction cat back
All they do is advance timing about 2 degrees to
burn the extra fuel they add around a 10 hp gain
from the chip, helps throttle response, low end
torque and best of all helps gas mileage 1 to 3
mpg
