Message: so i had my tranny rebuilt, when i picked it up... my headlights didnt work, no dash lights, doors don't auto-lock...
so i tell the tranny shop, they say take it to this elec. shop, if they determine that we caused the problems then we will pay to fix them...
so i take it to the elec. shop, they call me the next day and say that they have ruled out any fault by the tranny shop, but that the're still not sure of the problem, they think its the (computer), and that they'll have to pull it out to check it, maybe replace it...
estimate $400-500
am i getting screwed?
thanks, chris

Message: Chris,
I say get it back if you left it there before they touch it. There's a lot of things you can check on your own and at least be sure before you spend that kind of jack.
Sounds more like a wire got knocked off, broken or loosened to me if you had no problems before the tranny work.
For starters Check the grounds on inside fender behind battery. There should be a ground from the battery running to there too and should be two or three of them bolted to the fender. Then just look at all the wires under hood, under truck, etc. and follow them, checking as you go. Grounds are mostly bolted to the body, firewall, motor, behind battery on fender wells, etc.
What year is your truck? When you post back, give a little more info on your truck. Info I'm giving is basically on what I know about older vehicles and my 88.
There's lots of great people on this site that will help you troubleshoot and a great archive for searching your problem in if you haven't already tried it.
Hope this is of some help till you get better help.
Good Luck!

Message: One more thing just dawned on me, If you don't find a ground problem, look at the wiring under your dash. For any burnt, melted, fuzed together, etc. I just had to fix some of mine last weekend. They were melted with a few fuzed together and one of them ran to my door locks, which were barely working. They also ran up into my steering column to the blinker/controll arm and I was having trouble with the headlights changing to brights sometimes. After fixing them, everything is working as it should. This may not relate, but thought I should mintion it just incase.
Also, possibly could be your light switch, had that problem in my dump truck. Headlights would go off, dashlights to. Switch would get hot and go off. Other times they wouldn't come on.

Message: thanks diane for the reply.
02' dak 3.9L, 128,000 miles
i kind of feel trapped now...they'll probably get finished with it before noon tomorrow...and with all the miles that i drive i need it back quick, (and working)
my g/f did take it to a electrician friend of hers, and he had looked at the wiring for just the things that you mentioned, but he couldn't do to much more, cause' he couldn't pull an updated schematic.
it just pisses me off that before the tranny shop works on it everything works fine, then when the're done, PFFFT, no lights/locks.
i asked the elec. shop if the computer could just be reset, and they said no.
thanks, chris

Message: Hopefully, they'll find something minor before they replace the PCM and be honest about it. You can always bug them first thing in the morn and go there as soon as they open and maybe look at it a bit more. If you were there maybe telling them you don't beleive it's the PCM and tell them if they put one in you want some kind of guarentee that it will be fixed. Just bug the heck out of them. I've seen some crooks in my time. They may have the problem solved and still be trying to make you buy the PCM. If your there when they open you could try the lights, locks, ect. and make sure they still aren't working before they put the PCM in.
I'm just grasping at straws like you are probably already doing.
I know they will tell you no guarentee, but it's a lot of money to spend on something that might not be the problem. I'd just try to be there before they have a chance to do anything to it, if at all possible.
I hope someone like Larry will be on early enough in the morning to tell you if he thinks it the computor or not. I don't really think it is.
Try a new post Asking, Larry,J&J Auto for help. He's usually gets on pretty early in the morn. Alot of the guys that know a lot will see it and probably respond also.
Lots of Luck, reply back after its done and let me know how everything went.

Message: The electrical shop is trying to rape your wallet. They probably know which ground it is and want to milk you like a dairy pig.
Check all the grounds in the engine compartment and then remove the left kick panel (pull straight back) and check all the grounds near that shiny silver computer like thingy and up to the fuse panel which is above and to the left of the shiny silver computer like thingy. Also check the 3 plugs going into the shiny silver computer like thingy. I bet some douche bag may have unplugged one of them.
And remember, don't bend over because there could be an electrician right behind you.

Message: if they dont know what the problem is, how do they know the tranny shop didn't cause it????
maybe the new tranny itself didn't cause it, but maybe the tranny shop dorks busted a wire.
also, does the elec place have the same owner as the tranny shop?

Message: time to call the BBB (better business bureau), or at least tell the tranny shop that's what you intend to do. Either that or an attorney.
If you can swear that everything worked when you took it in and it was "broke" when you got it back then you should not have to pay one red cent.
I would be pissed as hell, I had a shop try to milk me like a fat hairy dairy pig once. Needless to say, they are now out of business.

Message: Your getting ripped off! The computer doesNOT control the lights windows locks ect. There is absolutely no reason why they should even check it. It only controls the motor and tranny. Did you check the fuses? Also check the wires where they enter the fuse box. The lighting and accessories are on a completly different circuit than the ecm. They have absolutely nothing to do with one another. Take the truck to a different shop.

Message: Well, at least that makes more since, CTM, instead of computer, ECM (I accidently typed PCM on earlier post).
So Chris, everything working good again?
I don't know how they could totally rule out the tranny shop didn't cause it. I know much more about home wiring than vehicles but they probably shorted it out somehow if they didn't disconnect the battery. Especially since you said everything worked fine when you took it there.
Later, Diane

Message: hi diane
everything works great now that my wallet is 500 bucks lighter...i think i'll go to the dealer and ask them about my scenario, see if they would say 'absolutely the tranny shop didn't do it' like the elec. shop did.
then maybe go to the tranny shop and see if i can work some kind of deal with them, 50% maybe.

Message: Hi Chris,
Take sicminds suggestion above and threaten them a bit if you need to. If it's a decent shop that cares about it's rep. it might work without accually having to report them, etc.
Anyway, I hope they will help you out and at least go 50/50.
Good Luck, Diane
