Message: If your going to have a lot of HP in the 360, say 300 or more for reference you would be better off finding a R/T or a Dak with a HD tow package in the junk yard having a 9 1/4 and limited slip already in it.
The 8 1/4 can only handle so much abuse and if your spendin money on it now may as well do the best you can, IMO.
Good luck.

Message: I've got a 321 rearend in my dak "99' 3.9l" that I am planning on doing quite a bit of work to as far as tranny "hopefully the viper 6speed" and putting out in 230 to 250 RWHP range... I would like something "preferred posi because limited is big waste of $$$" that I can use stock 321 rearend with so I can keep fuel mileage, but also won't spin everytime I try to drive somewhere off road "always get stuck in slightest slick area"... What's my best route here???
Thanks,
Greg

Message: Posi=Chevy term
LSD(limited slip differential)=Dodge term
There both the exact same thing..
Just a different term for them..
If your going to put out major HP..
look for a Locker rear..or a spool...

Message: Greg, not to doubt your good intentions or anything but you must realize a few things.....one: a Keisler 5spd would be a more logical swap I just hope your ready to do some welding and fabrication either of the two you end up using.
Second: I hate to tell you this but a "posi" and a "limited slip" are almost the exact same thing.
Posi is GM's name for it and Limited Slip is Ma Mopars (Dana).
Good luck with whatever you do but please research your facts before you offer help on a public forum, a lot of people are counting on correct information when they come here.

Message: Looky there, Keisler does make a 6spd now....
http://www.keislerauto.com/mopar/transmissions/dakota_6spd.asp
I dont recommend a locker or spool, they are just to hatefull for everyday driving. Been there done that and hated it.
You have to remember that the Sure Grip and Trac Loc came behind some very powerfull Mopars, needless to say, they CAN handle it. Oh and Greg, those other two terms I used above, also the same as "posi".

Message: I know all about the keislers and they have had the 6speed for quite some time now I beleive... T56 on here is fabricating up a 6speed Viper tranny with all adaptions built into it "bellhousing, driveshaft, clutch, shifter, you know everything you need for it to work", but I can get the viper 6speed for 3000 or the keisler for 4500 for same hp ratings:))
You know everyone on here has said that they are the same, but I've driven both and the limited slip "junk" will leave you stuck with one wheel in the air and one a spinnin :// The posi on the other hand will grab up and force both to turn "like the junk limited one is suppsot to..." Both were on a dodge as well... Go figure... It's just the posi was a change over... AND I've seen many of a limited slip rearends do the same thing, so I think it just wasn't this one... That's what I was refering to as far as wanting the posi over limited slip ; ))
So, what kind of posi rearends are there available for the 321 rearend??? Brand names??? Cost???
The main reason I wanted this was to eliminate the off road spinning while eliminating spinning as bad on roads:)) In other words if I ever decide to race someone just for fun, I don't won't to just sit there because the truck just wants to spin and I can't take advantage of the power that way ; ))
Thanks,
Greg

Message: tazzy,
LSD=Generic engineering term for all limited slip rear ends. It means "limited slip differential". Just like engine refers to that thing under the hood but Dodge calls theirs Magnums, GM calls them Piston Slappers and Ford calls theirs Modular Crap.
Sure-Grip®=Chrysler/Dodge term
Anti Spin=What Dodge calls their LSD now. I guess it a dumbed down version of LSD.

Message: Greg, look at a service manual for either "posi" , "limited slip" or "sure grip". They are all the same thing! They have some sort of centrifugal clutching mechanism so they pretty much function the same.
If you have driven something that only one tire spins in a low traction high RPM situation then it wasnt LS, someone may have told you that but I seriously doubt they told the truth.
hey, I dont have an 8 1/4 in it anymore. I put in a 1970 Cuda 8 3/4 so I could use the center section from my 340 Challenger that has 4.10's and sure grip.
My Dak is just a play toy, I only mess with it a couple of months a year. I wouldnt like to drive it every day with the 4.10's but they are big fun around town,

Message: Allrighty then, you don't happen to know the size of the 321 rearend do you? 8.25 is all I found even listed in the owners manual, but was told be dodge that there were two possibilities. Not good huh. Looked at the 4wheelparts.com website and liked what I saw so far on the posilocks :)) Will they hold up to turtore of racing and severe clutching at times?
Thanks Again,
Greg

Message: Fazdak, there is no centrifigal mechansim.
They look like clutch packs on both sides of the carrier. One pack for each axle. This is why a lsd additive must be used...to stop the clutches from chattering around sharp corners.
These clutches do wear out over time. This is why some work great and other high mileage units don't seem to work very well.
A spool should ONLY be used on a dedicated drag car.
