I have a 2002 Dakota V6 4WD, recently I noticed the temp guage is not registering (i.e. needle always at bottom). Now that it's turned cold it is hard to start and very hard to keep running. It's not the thermostat becuase it does make heat. Must be the coolant sensor I figure. Any thing I missed before I replace? Thanks.

There are 2 sensors both located down by the
thermo housing in the intake manifold

Engine temp sensor A/C side 2 wires

Heat guage sending unit Alt side 1 wire
this is the one you want to replace it sends the
signal to the guage

In open loop cold motor the 3 that will effect
running
Engine temp
IAT
IAC idle air control, back of TB take it off clean
with carb cleaner gently wipe dry it may be
sticking when its cold and causing your cold run
probs

Thanks J&J. Do you know if this is the same for a 2000? I fat-fingered earlier and indicated 2002.

I bought a "coolant sensor" on the way home tonight. It has a two wire connector, so it must be the engine temp sensor. Sounds like I need a heat guage sending unit? I have not looked at the truck itself to see which is which and their location. Can you explain the idle air control more please (back of TB)? Thanks so much.

coolent sensor just sends a signal to the comp the
guage sender is a diff animal

The IAC idle air control is located on the back of
the throttle body and what it does is open and
close to maintain the proper idle speed.

you can see the valve if you look down the back
hole in the top of the TB when shut off it should
be back off the seat when you start the truck
you notice it runs fast than slows down that is
the iac closing up for idle.

While running if you watch the valve it will move
back when you rev the motor and back foward to
close off some air flow when you let off the
throttle.

if it hangs up or reacts slow you will have idle
probs.

yes 2002 has all the same sensor setup 92 to 03
all set up the same except more o2's on newer
models
