Subject: Coolant leak, where from? IP: Logged
Message: My truck's got one more problem now... I got a coolant leak. It's a slow drip, but an annoyance nonetheless. Anyone got ideas of what to check out specifically while I'm home from school today? My friend from who's in the automotive program at my vocation school looked and all he could think of without getting under the truck (there's ice on the ground and it's a tad cold) is heater core or head gasket. It's a very slow drip outside the truck...not into my passenger floorboard. And I still have heat. Thanks for any help...

Message: Is it dripping? Where specifically is it dripping from? Could be a water pump, could be a hose (heater core or radiator), could be a loose clamp, could be a thermostat gasket, I've had all of these be the culprit in coolant loss. Head gasket generally will not leak on the ground, you will lose coolant, but it goes out the exhaust in the vapor form (you can smell it in your exhaust) or you will see it in your oil during the oil change. Water pump will weep out from under the fan area. Good luck!!

Message: first thing i would check is that damn five inch long hose that goes from the pump to the intake manifold... its under the alternator-a/c bracket
9 times out of 10, that is your problem

Message: If that's the hose I'm thinking of then we just put a new one on less than a year ago...no wait, wrong hose. I'll go mess around before it gets dark and see if I can find where I'm losing it from. It's just a slow drip under the truck somewhere...I noticed it when I moved the truck up the driveway to shovel the snow out from under it yesterday, there was a lil yellowish area where it'd been dripping.

Message: Okay no sign of the leak...too cold to really fiddle around with things. When it warms up or at least when we don't have 35 mph gusts of freezing cold wind, I'll look harder. Until then, it can leak all it wants as long as I keep enough in the truck that it don't overheat. I did however find another potential problem...
On my alternator there is a thick wire/cable coming out of it on the rear-left side (staring at it from the front of the truck) at about a 45 degree angle... the covering of that very thick wire has a small split about a half inch long that I'm sure could lead to corrosion or something. What all does that wire do? I'm guessing it does A LOT with the electrical system... and will be a bitch of a DIY job (I know next to nothing when it comes to engines). I did however order a Haynes manual the same day I registered for this site so it should be arriving any time now.

Message: good to hear that.
my dak leaks a little around the thermostat housing, not enough to leak on the ground but enough that i can see where its been leaking. i'm thinking about this summer putting a new 180* t/s in and doubleing the gasket. anyone think this will help?
oh and the leak is so minor that i havent lost any coolent per the dipstick since late may of last year. just an irritation thats all.

Message: I have a problem, hopefully you guys can help me out. I just noticed a bright green fluid leaking from the front of the engine bay onto the ground; it was a steady small stream, then it stopped after several minutes. Then, I drove my truck about 9 miles, parked and turned the engine off...same thing. I tried turning up the heat, and it was almost nonexistent. The leak seems to be originating from the front-bottom of the engine, between the fan and the block. There seems to be a wet spot near the top of a small rectangular ribbed piece on the right side of the engine (looking from the front of the truck), I assume it's part of the engine/tranny cooling system. Anyone heard of this before?
