Subject: tricky dash lights and guages IP: Logged
Message: What a great site! I own a 95 Dakota 3.9L V-6 extended cap 5-speed manual. I have had loud clattering sound from engine at low rpm, seem to think it is in the valve train but hope to get feedback. The major concern is recently with 80,000 miles after about an hour of steady freeway driving and restarting the engine after a brief stop the instrument lights don't work. Sometimes even worse all of the guages are pegged against their stops and the speedometer bounces around wildly. There also is something going on with the head lights when this happens. Sometimes if I disconnect the battery and reconnect it, it goes back to normal. What the heck is going on? Other wise it is a TERRIFIC truck!
thanks, Tyler

Message: I don't know if this will help any but, how old is your battery? My Caravan weirded out a bit like that when my battery started going down hill last winter, shortly there after, I got a new one and have had no more problems.
Also, if you know for a fact battery is good, have you checked to make sure the battery terminals are clean, none of your wiring has melted or fried, and grounds are all good?
Good luck, Diane

Message: It sounds like you may have a problem with the alternator voltage regulator. Try taping a digital voltmeter leads, to a cigarette lighter adapter and start up the truck and take it for a spin. You might want to take a friend along to monitor the voltage, while you keep your eye's on the road while driving. Check for a constant voltage around 14 to 14.5 volts. It sound like to me that your voltage levels may be going higher than normal. You might want to check grounding straps between the engine block and the firewire. Make sure the battery connections are clean and tight. You might consider taking to autozone and having them check it also.

Message: check the ground near or behind the kick panel on the drivers side, there should be a bolt or screw with several wires on it,this is the ground for the dash, light switch etc.
bad ground can make the gauges, dash lights etc do some weird things.also check ground on light switch

Message: Sounds like a bad ground my 95 did the same thing
peg the guages
The rattle you are hearing is no doubt the timing
chain put your head down by the front bumper like
you are looking under the truck and you will hear
it very loud.
Replace the chain and add the mopar tensioner
just put chain and tensioner in the search and
you will find a how to on replacing the chain and
adding the tensioner.
Or its also in the how to's on the home page

Message: Just reread part of my post:"You might want to check grounding straps between the engine block and the firewire. Make sure the battery connections are clean and tight." Ain't no such thing as firewire near the firewall of the truck. Not sure what I was thinking.
