Message: Far as I know they dont have a RR kit that fits an early 3.9. What I have done in the past is take a small block set, measure the shaft to the length of the stock one and cut it down to match, then pop the plug out and tap it into the new cut down one. You may have to get creative with the spacers depending on the kit.
I recommend 160 Tstat in that engine for the warmer months.
Dont forget shaving the heads for a bit more compression, vern probably meant that when he said "head work".
you can also replace your clutch fan with an electric one to reduce some drag.
If you have an air pump, take the belt off but keep it incase you need it for your local inspection.
Good luck

Message: Thanks FaZDak, I was gonna ask if I could remove the air pump on my 88 with out it creating any problems. Since we had removed the cat and the tube from the air pump, didn't seem like it was if any use and robbing my HP. I hadn't had a chance to ask anyone. Any other sujestions. I want to completely remove it.
Thanks, Diane

Message: Far as I know you can take it off alltogether.
you will need to keep the feedback valves in the piping that goes to the back of the manifolds, other wise the exaust will blow back.
Did a carb'd 3.9 years ago and the mods that woke it up the best was 1.6 RR's, shaving the heads a bit and adding a MP ignition kit ( which arent available anymore but I understand theres some way to use a LA engine dist ) and put on a Holley 500cfm 2bbl carb. Woke that little suker up pretty nice.
Good luck

Message: thanks everyone for the input but i think the best way to get the horsepower is a nicely built 318.
