Subject: Engine problem IP: Logged
Message: I have a 95 dakota slt 2 wheel peel/3.9L...My problem I have encountered and it has been this way for about a year...it seems that when I get below about a half tank of gas the engine seems to sputter and when you try to accelerate it almost seems like it is missing, it will eventually hit and take off but it makes a strange noise...A couple mechanics have said that it is definitely a fuel pump, others have said it couldn't be the pump...I have pulled my spark plugs and they are all clear and working properly, I have pressurized the fuel line yet and I suppose I should do that...as all of you know fuel pumps are a pain in the ass on dodge's because they are in the tank so I would really like to avoid that...Just wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this problem or has an idea of what may be wrong...Also I know that my year and model of dakota will take two different kinds of gas caps (vented and unvented) but it appears that the stock cap is on it...She runs fine as long as I have more than a half tank of gas in her...

Message: The pump may be working fine but it may have developed a leak so that it will suck air at about a half of a tank. You may be able to fix it but if not you need a new pump. Remember to get a good pump like a Chrysler one because the cheap ones don't work for crap.

Message: I HAVE A 94 V6 2WD W 165K KM'S.
LAST MAY WHEN TRAVELLING THROUGH THE ROCKIES, WITH 1/4 TANK OF FUEL, I KICKED HER INTO OVERDRIVE AND THE ENGINE SPUTTERED TERRIBLY FOR A QUICK MOMENT THEN STOPPED. I REFULED SHORTLY AFTER THIS OCCURANCE AND DID NOT NOTICE IT ANY MORE. I NEVER LET THE FUEL LEVEL DROP BELOW 1/4 TANK.
ONCE I HAD RETURNED FROM MY TRIP I LET THE TRUCK GO BELOW 1/4 TANK AND EVERY TIME I DID SO THE ENGINE WOULD SPUTTER AS IF STARVING FOR FUEL; THERE WOULD NEVER BE ANY INDICATION WHEN ABOVE 1/4. FINALLY ONE RAINY NIGHT IT STALLED ALL TOGETHER W LESS THAN 1/4 FULL, OF COURSE IT WAS MY WIFE WAS OUT W OUR 3YR OLD AND I HAD TO GO RESCUE HER ON MY MOTORCYCLE.
I NOTICED THAT THE PUMP WOULD NOT ACTIVATE WHEN THE KEY WAS TURNED ON. UPON SUGGESTION FROM A TOW TRUCK DRIVER, THAT I KNEW, I BANGED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK WITH MY CLUB AND THE PUMP KICKED ON.
I DROVE STRAIGHT HOME W NO PROBLEMS. THE NEXT MORNING IT FIRED UP AND RAN FINE. I BOUGHT A CARTER, I KNOW I KNOW, AND REPLACED IT.(I NEVER DID PRICE A DEALER ONE)
I REPLACED IT IN A TOWNHOUSE GARAGE W NO PROBLEMS. I REMOVED THE BOX, W THE AID OF MY WIFE.
PROBLEM SOLVED.

Message: Well I guess I didn't say but I have my exhaust Y piped after the cat...but i cut the cat off and I have two glass packs...could that be the problem??? A leak in the pump sounds like that would probably be the problem and depending on how big the leak is will determine at what level of fuel it will begin to lose pressure...i will have to see if i can get that taken care of sometime when I am home from school... By the way, how many bolts are there that hold the bed to the frame? and besides breaking those bolts loose what else needs to be unhooked? tail lights i am guessing but i don't really want any suprises when i do this

Message: "CARTER" IS AN AFTER MARKET MANUFACTURER OF FUEL PUMPS AND APPARENTLY A FEW OWNERES DON'T LIKE THEM. I HAVEN'T HAD ANY PROBLEMS SINCE REPLACING IT. MY PUMP WAS $275CAN
AS FO THE TRUCK BED, I BELEIVE THE WAS 6 BOLTS AND I HAD NO TROUBLE REMOVING THEM. AND MY TRUCK CAME FROM NEWFOUNDLAND, WHICH USES SALT LIKE PEOPLE BREATH AIR. YOU HAVE TO UNPLUG THE TAIL LIGHT WIRE HARNESS JUST UNDER THE TAILGATE. REMOVE THE COTTER PIN AND SPARE TIRE LIFT PIPE, THE TIRE CAN STAY ON. THE TAILLIGHTS ARE EASILY REMOVED AND THE BULBS JUST UNTWIST. THE FUEL FILLER NECK IS HELD IN BY 4 SCREWS.
THE BED IS EASY TO LIFT OFF BY TWO STRONG PERSONS, AS IT HAS TO COME UP ABOUT A FOOT TO CLEAR THE FILLER NECK. USE CARE NOT TO SCRATCH WHEN LIFTING, THE BUMPER HAS SHARP EDGES(TRUST ME) FOR THE EXTRA FEW MINS REMOVE THE BUMPER'S 6 BOLTS. IT COULD SAVE A PAINT JOB. THE REMOVAL OF THE TAILGATE ALSO WILL SAVE WEIGHT.
THE PUMP: IT'S AN ALL ONE UNIT, PUMP AND FILTER IN A 95. REMOVAL IS VERY EASY JUST UNSCREW THE RETAINING RING, UNPLUG THE WIRES AND REMOVE THE HOSES AND LIFT OUT. I DID NOT DEPRESSURIZE THE SYSTEM. I WRAPED A RAG AROUND THE HOSE AND PULLED IT OFF. THE RAG SOAKED UP THE MIN AMOUNT OF FUEL THAT WOULD HAVE SPRAYED OUT(NO MORE THAN AN EGG CUP FULL) INSTALLATION IS REVERSAL AND THE SYSTEM WILL RE PRESSURIZE WITH THE TURN OF THE KEY. PICK UP A SYPHON HOSE AND DRAIN THE TANK TO ENSURE THE REMOVAL OF WATER AND OR DIRT
SINCE REPLACING THE PUMP NO PROBLEMS. I'VE ALMOST DRAINED THE TANK. I LET THE FUEL LIGHT COME ON AND THEN SOME MORE JUST TO CHECK THE SYS.
I DID THE WORK MY-SELF, NO AIR TOOLS FOR THE BOX, ONLY A 3/8 RATCHET, DID IT ON MY BACK. I REMOVED THE BOX MYSELF USING 2X4'S AS IT WAS LATE AND TOO PROUD TO ASK A NEIGHBOUR TO ASSIST. THE JOB COULD BE DONE (COMPLETE) IN ABOUT 2-3 HRS WITH TWO MEN.
PICK UP TWO 1/2" STAINLESS HOSE CLAMPS. I HAD TO SAW OFF TWO RUSTED ONES ON MINE.
I WOULD RATE THE JOB AS "VERY EASY"
HOPE THIS ASSISTS YOU LET ME KNOW WHEN YOUR DONE

Message: Thanks BC/CANADA hopefully I can work on that a Saturday afternoon with my dad, or over spring break, I don't drive it much here at school so I don't worry about it too much. From your instructions it doesn't sound very difficult and I believe it is what I will do.
Thanks again
Chuff
