Subject: How to change 2 rear passenger plugs

I have a '97 3.9L, and tore up my hands changing out 4 of the 6 spark plugs last night. I was hoping you guys could give me advice on changing the two rear plugs on the passenger side. It doesn't appear that I will have much room there to loosen with my wrench.

Thanks for any advice you can give!

Doug, it's not a race, so take your time and try the shorter extensions with a stuby wratchet. If they are in tight, you just have to nad up and get them suckers out!

I am very capable with tools and all sorts of machines(that's how I make my living) and it takes me a solid hour to do all 6 plugs:

Blow out the plug base with air first, so no crud falls in.

Gap all new plugs.

Remove and install plugs 1 at a time, so there is no wire mix up.

Grease all wire boots, so it's easier next time to pull off the boot.

If someone can infact do ALL this in 5 minutes, they should start up a mobil plug changing service and make a million.

I remove the air filter box to get to those plugs. To me the hard one is under the brake booster. 99's have a smaller booster, that makes the job easier on them. Good luck.

What you need to do is find a guy with small hands
and tiny arms that can reach in there

LOL

I always used to joke about the Jap cars you need
a little Jap guy to work on them who canfit in all
the tiny spots you need to get in to do anything
on the cars.

Enginers, there comes a time in every project when
the enginer needs to be shot

I just changed out the factory plugs for AP3923s and I'm a fairly good shadetree mechanic. Took over an hour and a pint of blood. I would surely like to see someone change all 6 in my Dak in 5 min. or even 30.min..
Of course if they don't have air cond. and pwr. brakes and had removed the air cleaner box it would be a little faster.
The plugs in mine were torqued down so much that I broke the insulator on two trying to get them out. Hope my lug nuts are not torqued down that tight in comparison, I'll never break them loose.

I have no problem chaging those 2 particular plugs out even with a full length socket wrench. Hmm. I use your typical 5/8 deep socket and I think a 1 inch extension. Maybe removing (if you haven't already) those stupid metal sleeves they put around the spark plugs would help.

So, we have 5 minutes and 15 minutes. Did you guys work on any of the Space Shuttles by chance?

Or let me guess, you helped design our ball joints and front rotors in record time.

Done fast or done right? I'll take done right EVERY time.

I hate to rain on someones pissing contest but it takes me 20 minutes including gapping and I'm 6'6" 270 lbs so my hands are far from what most women call small. I don't remove the airbox either.

And I'll have to assume it's done right because it's been 10k and everything is still good. If you want to pay my airfare to anywhere above 70F I'll be glad to demonstrate. ;)
