Subject: 5-spd Behaving Badly... IP: Logged
Message: On my '00 Dak (3.9L 5-spd), about 70% of the time I start from a dead stop I hear (and feel thru the clutch pedal) a grinding right when the clutch starts to engage. Doesn't make a difference whether I take off slow & easy or not, it still usually happens. Also, when I try to put it in gear while stopped (I don't hold the clutch in at red lights; heard that's bad for the throwout bearing) it doesn't want to go into 1st unless I put it in 2nd first, or give it a quick double clutch. Plus, when I'm braking to a stop and going down thru the gears (clutch completely disengaged), the trans itself sometimes grinds as I put it in 1st right before I stop (I only do that at stop signs; I do know these trannys don't like having 1st engaged while moving). I can actually feel the gears clash thru the shifter when that happens. Any ideas as to what's up? It's only got 38k miles, so I hope it's not major probs...Thanks in advance for any advice.
