Subject: Question about TB's? IP: Logged
Message: The factory computers come adjusted to your stock 3.9 V6 tb. By adding a stock V8 tb won't that skrew up your sensors and the computer? Or does the computer over time readjust to the new amount of air flow? See I have a 93 3.9 and I know I need a tb from 92-95 but some mechanic told me not to do it because he said it would skrew the computer up along with the sensors? Does this coversion usually have successful results? What would you possibly gain in horsepower and fuel mileage?
Let me thank you ahead of time for your input.

Message: Jon L., I have a 93 3.9 also and I just put a v8tb on it. It did give me more noticable power although I haven't put enough miles on it yet to check the milage but I've heard that it can help that out too. Definitely worthwhile mod. I found one off of car-part.com for $46 plus shipping. Bolted right on--no cable needed, just a $2.00 gasket. Get one from a '93 v8 dakota if you can to avoid needing the cable. Mine even came with the sensors still attached so now I have an extra set of sensors....

Message: I just got a TB from a guy. I have a '98 3.9 and this come off of a '96 318. Will this work? I know I will have to change the cable, but everybody was saying get the same year model. I can't see where it would matter. If anybody has any info let me know.

Message: Yes the TB will work
The computer will compensate for the added air flow.
They are learning systems and will adjust timing
and fuel to maintain the 14.7 air fuel ratio

Message: Thanks I'm gonna try it. I'm going to school for Tool and Die, i'm trying to decide what to do about the Intake. I can take it off and run a countersinking program around the holes, but is it worth the trouble and the risk. I don't know if there is any thing that could break through. A guy brung in a TB and bored it out, but went too big, and it broke through. I don't want to have to buy a new intake. If I do that, will the V6 TB go back like factory, or will it matter?

Message: I was also wondering if I could take the TB apart and just switch out the plates where the cables hook up. It looks like one end of it has been flatened for permanent assembly. If anybody knows, I'd like to save the $30 for the cable, if not, no big deal.

Message: Just remove the torque step and air horns and you
will notice better off idle and low end response
and top end it helps across the entire rpm range

If you do bore it you need to use a dial indicator
to get it centered and no bigger than 46mm on a
V6 body or you will break through.

Message: OK, well, what to do? I have access to machinary that will do the modifying to my V6 perfactly. I can mill off the top, bore the inside, evan hone it if I need to. I'm sure you can buy the bigger plates somewhere. Now, I've got this V8 TB from one of my friends, he said, make sure it works, and we'll discuss prices later. I'm gonna have about $70 in the V8, and about $0 in the modified V6. What's the difference gonna be performance wise? My low end suffers now, that's my main concern. Tell me what YOU would do.

Message: Also, if this is a money saving mod, why not swap out the rods going through the TB's. If you have to buy 4 new screws, that's gotta be cheaper than a $30 cable, and lot less trouble (I would think). I just finally got the torqe step thing, I read a post that said run your finger along the insied. I can definatly tell where that is with accerlartion, THAT'S the low end mod that I need. I just need to know whether to use the V6 or V8. Anybody know the part numbers for 46mm flappers?

Message: Budysr, I would say you got a very good price for your V8 TB. The biggest horsepower gain ofr the buck, I think.
Larry, I put a Fastman 46mm on my truck this weekend ahd did the tps mod after work Monday. I made 3 passes with my Gtech to see what is was showing for changes between the v8 tb and the fastman after running it for approx. 150 miles. It look, like I lost a couple of hp but gain low end torque. I was a bit surprised, maybe the G-Tech isnt all that accurate or the pcm is still learning the changes due to the fastman.
