I have a 92 dodge dakota 318000 km engine ran fine till last summer. no changes to anything. have ocasinally replaced parts but this is not a usual problem. I turn the key when it is warm out (summer) and it fires right up. in the winter, the colder the truck gets the worse/longer this problem occurs. Turn the key, nothing , leave it turned for an hour, a rapid clicking can be heard coming from the autoshutdown relay and the a/c clutch relay and the fuel pump relay. slowly the clicking gets slower until it stops, then voila! she starts. now, before all this happens, when you crank her, she has no fuel pressure, that is to say zero, not even a droplet at the pres. test fitting on the rail. I'm leaning towards computer problems. BUT I was wondering if anyone else had an answer or suggestion to my curious problem. IF you shut it off after running for an hour it'll start back up. if you wait 15mins before starting it after shutiing it off, you have to wait for the clicking to finish again. She runs fine when she does run, I havent checked fuel pressures or anything but I wouldnt say thats the issue as she has good mileage, power and snap on the throttle. and purrs like a kitten when warm. so, ambient temperature has a definate bearing on my problem. Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Check your temp sensor and IAT

http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/v6/6150.html

There is a relay in the power dist box under the
hood drivers side.

The relays are all the same just switch them
around and see if that helps, It also sounds like
you have a bad connection, about a foot back from
the dist box there is a red wire that goes to 3
fedder wires, fuel, ign and comp they caroad and
will do exactly what you are discribing.

Remove the connector and solder the wires togather
its in the wire harness and you need to untape the
harness to find this connection,

No fuel tells me this is a very good posibility

Thanks Alot. I appreciate the advice, the IAT sounds like the ticket, the local parts store doesnt have one but is only 15$ so I've ordered it and it should be in next week. MY transmission doesnt shift into o/d until it's hot and it's been doing that for 4 years, the temp sensor sounds like the cure, it's a dealer only item so I called them, 35$ , ordered as well. cheap fixes for minor iritations (Other folks might say major). Hopefully this will cure my truck woes. I'll keep you posted as to my results. Thanks again.

Your transmission won't shift into OD anyway until it reads a certain temp of the oil... Could be your sensor in the tranny, but if it doesn't give problems in the summer than most likely hasn't warmed up yet... Might also want to check your ground cable on one of the powersteering pump bolts... I had similar problem and that was my cure...

Well, I finally got off the pot about this problem. Turns out it's my ecm. I took it apart after tracing every wire under the hood. Found the built in transformer that supplies 5.0 reference volts to the sensors, when cold only put out 2 or 3 volts. When warmed up it'd put out 4.7 , there was a hole burnt in the rubbery glue stuff next to it and you could see the wires. Trip to the junkyard 65 bucks, presto. runs like a top and I even get better fuel mileage. The transmission shift thing is my next issue to tackle. Thanks to those who posted replies. At least my dash water temp sensor works again now. No money lost in my books. JUst some valuable lessons.
