Subject: Spark plugs IP: Logged
Message: I picked up some Autolite 5224 Platinum's tonight, how do these compare to the 3923's?
I tried to convince my dad to get the 3923's, but he wouldnt do it because the Wal-mart computer said otherwise ;[

Message: Magnum engines don't like Platinum plugs,there are some whoo say they run fine ,but the majority say otherwise.If your truck doesn't run well with the new plugs its because they are platinum.(I'm assuming yours is a Magnum engine)

Message: As I understand it, the difference is the 52's are an extended tip plug or a "truck plug" as I've heard others call them. I had a set of those in my 3.9 and they ran fine but I did switch to a set of the AP3923's gapped at .005" over stock(upon Larry's recommendation) and they seem to fire even better than the 5224's Either way, you're o.k.
The platinum tip plugs do fine in this engine(at least they do in mine) and they will last longer than the copper ones.....
also, the 3923 is one heat range colder than the 24 series..

Don't get the APP's
AP=platnium on one side
APP=Platium on both sides

Message: The AP5224 will run great just gap them .005 over
factory recommendations.
On a virtually stock truck stick with the same heat
range, your dad was right on that one, once you
do the intake, cold air, V8 or aftermarket TB and
the 1.7's than drop 1 heat range to the 3923 there
is no 5223 or I would be running them, the
extended tip will run just a little cooler do to
the incoming charge cooling the tip better
The reason most people say they do not run well is
because they run the stock gap, the platinum tip
has less resistance to fire the plug and will run
hot at the stock gap open them .005 and they run
the same temp.
Also these guys knocking the Autolites, do they
know that the Autolite plugs also have a solid
copper core just like the champ plugs. My truck
had a bad flat spot with the champ plugs just
off idle, I than went to the AP3924 and it was
cured this was before any mods were done.
Put them in and enjoy how your truck runs you will
notice a little better off idle response with the extended tip and better low end power

Message: I have Champions in mine and I run just great...no probs or nothing...so why are the champion ones so bad since the magnum motors were designed for them.

Message: I just put another set of Champions in my truck, ('91 w/ 124,000 miles)the vehicle is bone stock, no mods nor do I ever intend to modify my truck any and the Champions run great. Autolites seem fine too, ran them in the ole Ford I had, but why mess with what works? Also, Champions in the 2000 Jeep w/ no problems (it has 83,000 miles)

Message: There is nothing wrong with the champ plugs and
they do run well as do the autolites.
What mopar is talking about is the solid copper
core both plugs have and will disapate the heat
from the tip faster and avoid a hot spot that
could cause detonation.
Not all plugs have a solid copper core
The plat tip plug on stock ign alows you to run
a slightly bigger gap
With the MSD set up a reg plug can not be taken
behwond .050 the plat tip will run .060 and
mantain the right heat.
Why do racers or any one go aftermarket ign
Hotter spark
Why
To take advantage by using a bigger gap creating
a bigger flame front and a faster burn
A nitro burning hemi runs a 1/4 gap and 80 amps
on the plug what does that tell you

Message: Well, I ended up putting only 2 in during my shop class today, the other ones are extremely hard to get to.....
Anyway, I don't care if anyone believes me or not but it seems to run a little smoother than it used to, considering the plugs hadnt been changed in 65k miles

Message: NGK's. Better than any platinum or fancy pantsy 2,4 prongs types. I like them over stock too.
