Message: I've got a 00 Dak 3.9L 5spd 4X4. I get a metallic rattle when in gear with rpm around 1000, like if you put in in to high gear sounds like it might be the timing chain. wondering if that is characteristic of the typical V6 timing chain noise that everyone talks about. im not particularly concerned about it, just curious if it is the timing chain.
(Im new to trucks).
Also, how long could i expect the transfer case to last (I believe I have the NV231). Dealer (not the one i bought it from) said it was in good shape when i bought it, at 53k. I dont beat on it. very little offroad use, some snow use. also how is the best way to keep it up. ive heard you should to about 15 miles a month in 4wd to keep the gears in the t-case from locking up. At what mileage interval should the fluid be changed?
Anyone got any advice?
Thanks much

Message: the rattling to me indicates you don't have the timing chain tensioner and you can count on that chain failing some day, i'd put a nice double roller on there before it leaves you stranded
i haven't heard any hard and fast rules on at what point in mileage this will happen but it's happened to enough people that i've heard of
just my opinion though

Change the transfer case every 25,000 they take
trans fluid and hold less than a Qt
Chrysler ATF +4 or
Amsoil universal synthetic
