Subject: max rpms for v6? IP: Logged
Message: was wondering about what the max rpms are for the v6, cause earlier this evening/morning i was flooring it on the highway trying to get past 117mph and noticed it just kinda sat at 4500rpms, i have done the hole custom cold air intake and also used a superchips programmer and was wondering if this was the right place for it to stop or if i was needed to do something to get past what seemed to be a limit.
its an automatic also so i dont watch my rpms as well as i proably should.

Message: we were talking about it at work today, problem is the lousy airiad air intake i have on it, its pulling hot air in due to no plate or anything to cause it to pull in cool air, cause the govener as far as i know has been taken off due to my super chips programmer, gonna order an intense performance stage 3 cold air intake and see if that helps out, gonna do the headers and throttle body soon to. So i think the combination should help it out.

Max power is at 4500-4600 on the Magnum V6. Twisting the engine to 5500+ is silly - no power gains achieved.

Message: All I have to say is your tach is way off because
the V6 computers are set to cut at 4800 rpm
There is also a speed limiter on most 110 115 they
will shut you down

Message:
Factory PCM is set at 5200-5500 redline (also will activate ASD to prevent over-rev). Factory speed limiter is (normally) set at 115 - depends on model/year though.
Superchips will only raise the speedlimiter and revlimiter...won't eliminate it.

Message: is there anyway to remove the speed limiter, or would that be a dumb thing to do?
Also i went for 5 runs today to try to try the max again, instead of it stopping at 4500 rpms it was stopping around 4300-4400rpms, it was colder out today though than it was when i tried it the last time. this the the limitation only when pushing 110+ rest of the time i seem to be able to get to about 5k rpms before it shifts.
larry: if my tachs off what could of done to cause that if anything or could it be something due to it being the california pcm and being a 2003?
thx again for the information so far i appreciate it.

Message: None of the factory guages are very acurate, close
but not perfict.
There is realy nothing you can do about it.
My tach says idle 600 sometimes 750 but the
scanner always reads 672 idle. sometimes it sticks
on 2000 untill I rev it up again. did that since
it was new
I have no speed or rev limiter on my mopar pcm
and very rarly rev it over 5000 there is no power
up there even being stroked and a hot cam 268/272
still no power there my band is between 2500 and
5000 coming on very strong at 3000 rpm it will
set you back in the seat.
The 3.7 is an entirerly differant motor than the
3.9 and makes its power at higher rpm's and will
rev higher than the 3.9

Message:
You can raise the rev-limiter and/or speed limiter via custom programming (most programmers won't allow complete removal due to liability issues) but it won't do you any good revving past 5000.
I also run a hotter cam in my V6 (along with quite a few other mods) without having to turn it past 5000rpm. The motor is capable of more mechanically, but no need as the powerband is in the same range as Larry's.
On the tach being off, you can recalibrate it via the DRB-III, if you have access to one, or just run a simple reset on the cluster:
Hold the tripmeter button down while you turn the key to the ON position (not start). Hold the button for about 2-3 seconds and let go...you'll see the cluster run through the built-in self-test and then gauge reset (needles bounce from low-high range and then back down).
