Message: Has anybody put a 5 speed in place of a 42re? I am doing a 5.9 swap and i dont have to keep replacing transmissions. A 300 dollar clutch is a lot better then 700 transmission internals. anyone have any advice or has done this let me know. thanks

Message: ok, it's been 12 years since done one, let's see.....
need to add...
clutch pedal, linkage, clu. master cyl, clu slave, rpm guage, change flywheel, change rear seal/bearing, drill holes for shifter and console, might even need diff computer (shift/ idle controls....??)
pain in the pooper.
It's a little easier if you have a floor shift auto, cause the console's already there.

Message: I recommend going through ---
http://www.keislerauto.com/mopar/dakota.html
They are a bit pricy around $3000.00 for everything for the 5 speed and around $4500.00 for everything for the 6 speed... I would personally go with the 6 speed myself allthough is very pricy...
I recommend this because after 80,000 miles I'm allready having to replace the 5 speed in my dakota and that's only with the V6 3.9l for a power plant... It's also my understanding that even with the newer heavier 5 speeds you can expect to be replacing the 5th gear every other year or so if you've got a lot of performance built into your truck or do a lot of towing...
So even with dodge's manual's you can still expect to par out the booty every so often for rebuilds or new stuff... This is the main reason I recommend Keisler, also they are rated for 4 to 800hp or something close to that, so you can expect really long life out of them and good fuel milleage as well with their 6 speeds...
Atleast give them a look at the least... You'll regret it if you don't...

Message: the only thing I didn't see with the 5 speed kit is a new flywheel and a master cylinder (clutch), pressure plate and throwout bearing...not sure if their clutch comes as a kit, but it just says clutch disk. might be cheaper to look in the bone yard for an auto.
Good Luck.

Message: yea Krc has that kit on their web site. Right now I'm a little undecided cuz its a lot of cash to throw down one way or another but I just enjoy manuals a little more. Also I think the kieslers are fully synchroed. thanks guys
