I have a 98 dakota cc w/the 3.9, auto. I am at wits end. I get an average of 13 miles to the gallon it seems no matter how i drive my truck. i have replaced the 02 sensors, plugs, wires, regular oil changes and such, but I know people with full size quad cab fords that are gettin 20-25 mpg. What is wrong. My truck is 2wd and I am running 31*10.50's on it, but my mileage hasn't changed since I had the 235/75/15's

First make sure you are accurately figuring the gas mileage. No offense but about 90% of the people that come into dealership complaining about gas mileage are not adding it up right. If you go to the dealer they can put the scan tool on it and make sure the injector duration and air fuel ratios are correct (which they probably are if the check engine light is not on). That way you will know that the engine is operating normally. Also a clogged air filter, and low tire presures can drastically reduce mileage, as will those bigger tires. You might also check that none of the brakes are dragging.

My other truck is an F-150 Supercab and i only get 6 mpg! Of course the truck is slightly modified :) I can only make it from work to home twice before the 22 gallon fuel cell is empty.

The best way to increase gas mileage is to lighten your foot:). Depending on how I drive I get between 14-20mpg. I have a 99 reg cab 3.9 5-speed.

Any cheap mods that can be done to increase gas mileage?

What does everyone else think about this throttle body spacer...did it add any noticable power? Also, where can i find one?

I may decide to get some kind of motor upgrade instead of tint/interior neons under the dash...since I just got my license and am spending wayyy to much on gas!

I have a 99 cc auto and i get about 120-150 to the tank depending on how i drive it.But i do know i need a full tune-up, plus o2 sensers. So i guess that could be one reason why its so bad.But i'll be doing all that as soon as i get the $200 to buy the parts.

What you need to do is have someone with a scanner
check what the sensors are telling the computer.

Check
MAP
IAT
Engine Temp
TPS
o2

see if they are in tolerance sometimes a lazy
sensor will not trip the mil light but is still
bad and will cause bad mileage and performance

13 miles per gallon is about right for me also
the 3.9 is not a great motor for gas mileage when you calculate the weight of the truck and actuall horsepower

my uncles s-10 gets only 15 in town and his truck is only about 1/2 the truck when towing

3.9 reg cab straight piped with towing package and 31 inch tires

Check your injector sync to far to the - side
will effect gas mile age

TDC compresion stroke rotor pointing at or near
#1 there is a line on the pickup plate marked cyl
the rotor button should be right over the line
or to the plus side rotor in the clockwise
direction of the line

The V6 motors should get between 17 to 19 mpg on
the highway, I get 19 winter 22 to 24 summer but
I know everything is right on my truck

The truck I just put the chain and tensioner in
got 23 on its way back to AZ up from 19 20, I also
set the sync at +3 and scaned all the sensors to
be sure everything was ok before I gave it back to
the customer I put 200 miles on the truck and
tweaked everything

It's just kinda aggravating that is costs me $35 or more a week, I have a liitle car that needs some work and I am thinking about fixing it so I can drive it to work and back, but isn't that the whole idea of buying a new/newer truck is so you can have creature comforts and a nice vehicle. The way I figured my mileage is that I get about 260 miles to a tank and it has a 20 gallon tank. I always run premo gas ( anybody who says it doesn't make a difference obviously does not know what they are talking about! ).
Also if anybody wants to buy my old wheels and tires they are for sale, I live in SW Missouri.

I am with you MEC26. I have a 2000 QC and I have a 22 gal tank and I go 290-300 mil and my fuel light comes on. And it has been like this from the day I got it. I have 41000 mil on it and am starting to have problems. Two weeks ago I took it to the shop, I had an intake bolt rust and break off. They could not tell me why. And last week I found that a freeze plug was rusting and leaking so I took it back to the shop to find out that it was two leaking. I got it new and have taken care of it by the book. but yes I don't get good gas mil. Tina

Amsoil Synthetic Oil Can Increase Gas Mileage

Message:

*** "Off Topic" ... but ...

Fuel economy can be very difficult for the consumer to accurately gauge. Once again, it has been proven by AMSOIL and others, through use of industry accepted fuel economy tests, field demonstrations, and as witnessed by most of our customers .... that switching to synthetics DO IN FACT show a fuel economy increase = better MPG.

You should really do some research and reading before you make such a comment, because it is absolutely false.

if you read the owners manual it says to use 87 octane and that the higher grades do not improve and may actually decrease performance.
