Subject: Spark Plugs IP: Logged
Message: I have an '03 dakota sport 4X4, was wondering if anyone has ever tried any high performance plugs such as splitfire or platinum+4's. Was wondering if a hotter plug would increase performance or fuel economy, and if there would be any negative effects on the engine for using such a spark plug

Message: I had installed the Autolites in My truck, i did not have good luck with them, made no improvements, played with the gap no change. i do know just changeing the plugs will not make a huge diffrence, but i did replace plugs that had about 28,000 miles on the o.e designed copper plug, the autolites made it run worse. thats my 2 cents, alot of people that post on this board love em?!?!?who knows

Message: Autolite plugas are not the best for our trucks and neither are bosch platinum and ac delco for sure...dodge chevy and ford made their engine to run in the best possible way the engine can.
These autolite plugs are not the way to go... alot of people say its better because your running one range colder plug but Champion works the best with dodge and if you want to have a spark plug that is one range cooler than go with something that it was made for Dodge=Champion, AP=Ford, ACDelco=Chevy...thats just the way the manufacturers did it...dont ask me...trust me my father has explained this several times to me and has alot of research on this topic

The crap you buy for 89cents are trash.
25 yrs of experience here, not heresay. Champion is probaly the only plug I would say not to use.. and Splitfire.
Ignore above post.

Message: Larry from J and J Auto has tested just about every kind of brand and plug type available, take his advise. I've seen on speedtweaks that the autolite 3923 should a gain of about 4 hp on dyno results. I have personally tried the Bosch Platinum +4's in my Gen3 dak. I had good results, good low end torque and good running all the way to redline. When I pulled the plugs the deposits on them were white indicating they were running too hot. I tried the autolite 3924's (factory recommended) with good results, ping under load during hot weather. I recently installed the AP3923's gapped to 60 thousands using a complete MSD system on my Gen 3 dak. I must say I was impressed with the results. So I installed them on my Gen2 5.2 4x4 with equally impressive results, here again using an MSD system. One thing I have noticed since installing the 180 degree thermostat on Gen3 3.9, it's not as sensitive to fuel changes or plugs as it was with the 195 degree thermostat. This past summer I made a trip to South Dakota with a friend who has 2001 Chevy with the 5.3 liter v8, he has to run 89 octane to keep his truck from pinging. I was able to run on 85 octane without any pinging what so ever, although my gas mileage dropped slightly.

Message: Jeff
Yes they will help with ping.
A colder plug will lower the cyl temp by about 170
degrees.
Autolight AP3923 and gap them .005 over factory
recomendation
I ran the +4's low end fine but my truck was a dog
when I got on it.
Wadak
The AP's at .060 with the MSD system like
that hey, Why put a hotter ign to run the same gap
that is what aftermarket is for hotter spark
bigger gap creates a bigger flame front and gives
you a bigger bang faster burn and more power
I would say there is a 10 HP gain with the system
with the AP's at .060 very noticeable on every
truck I have done it to.
Mark the guy who created this site also went to
the AP's at .060 with his MSD and noticed the
improvement instantly as many others have

Message: As Larry said, the colder plugs will help the pinging problem. I have used the 3924's in my 92 5.2 dak with the 195 degree thermostat. I had pinging under load during hot weather. by changing the plugs alone to the 3923's that solved the pinging problem. By switching to the AP3923's gapped to .060, I gained a definite increase in power at any RPM. All this thanks to one of Larry's previous posts. Just remember that if you are running a standard ignition system you won't be able to gap them to .060.

Message: i have never had luck with splitfire plugs, Autolite plugs are cheap, usually you can buy them at a wal-mart or something, you have to remember that places like that are not part stores and they dont handle them the same, ive seen them come new damaged. champion is the best plug that i know, thats all ill ever use in my dakota

Message: MSD 6a and a MSD blaster coil but you also need
better wires with the hotter set up MSD 8.5 is
what I run with mine.
Just get a set same year dak with 5.2 you will
have 2 wires left over but they fit perfict no
messing around cutting and installing ends like
with a universal set
6a box $150
coil $40
wires $60
summitracing.com
Than drop some Autolight AP3923 and gap them at
.060 and its a very noticeable increase off idle
all the way to red line
on you 96 you may also need the tack adapter if
it trips your mil light.
