Subject: what are the symptoms of bad ball joints IP: Logged
Message: I've researched all the threads on here about the
replacement of ball joints etc. but no one talks about what
clued them in that the ball joints needed replacing. I've
done the jack the tire up and yank on it test and mine dont'
budge. I'm wondering if you can tell while driving there is a
problem? I have a 99 2WD and I'm surprised I don't have
this problem yet. I guess I'm lucky the only things that have
gone bad on me are my cat and rear wheel speed sensor
and cam shaft position sensor.
Thanks

From what I've heard, if it doesn't budge when you yank on it, you are probably all right. I think another thing to watch for would be any popping sounds coming from up front when you go around corners.
I've got a 97 with 115,000 and my ball joints appear to be in good shape.

Message: i have a 99 2wheel drive as well, and mine are fine so far. however i did need to replace my upper control arm bushings (under the extended warranty, but i had to call chrysler contracts to find out - my service writer had told me i'd need to fork over around $400).

Message: Nice article taz, but a dial indicator is something most people do not have. Its useful for checking crankshaft end play but a serious overkill for this measurement.
Jack up the front one side at a time under the control arm. You must lift under the control arm and not the body so you don't load the joint. (Don't go off topic here ;> )
Grab the top of the wheel and yank it in and out and listen and feel for knocking/clunking and movement. Visually inspect the ball joint and steering knuckle union as well while yanking about.

Message: Blacksunshine, you have a bad ball joint, join the club. Probaly on the passenger side.
By the way, that is the answer to the original post. Going around corners slowly, over a bump, is the most revealing trait.

Message: try checking for verticle movement too, lateral movement is bad but verticle movement means that seperation is eminent, lateral means possible breakage. jack up the truck in front, support with jack stands, grasp top and bottom of tire and shake, ANY movement is bad, then remove said tire to make getting at the joints (upper and lower)and try prying it apart with a prybar or heavy screwdriver, more then 1/16 movement is bad, ALSO try grabbing top and bottom with a large channel lock type plyer and compressing, more then 1/16 movement is very bad. do this with both the upper and lower joints.

Message: Oh yeah let me tell ya....you hear a constsant squeak comming from the passengers side and a squeeking sound when you turn the steering wheel to the right (passengers side).....that would be bad ball joints. My '01 Dak started dong that about 3 months ago and changed out the bushings on the control arm but the sqeak kept coming. I just found that my upper ball joints are ok but my lowers are blown, I try to drive as little as possible until i can get her to the shop or see if Larry or someone can tell me if this can be fixed myself?

Message: I thought I had bad ball joints but after reading this page I am beginning to think its something else. My truck, 97' Dakota 2wd extended cab, drives fine until I hit a bump or pot whole, then the front end rattles and bounces. When I get up to 55mph or more the whole front end begins to shake violently! It feels as if my front tired are loose and wobbling. I assumed it was my ball joints but there is no sound in turns, just bad shaking during bumps and speeds of more than 55.
Tie rods maybe? I just put new ones on 18 months ago.
I do live in Michigan though, terrible roads!
