Subject: seems like a major problem. IP: Logged
Message: I just rebuilt a 95 3.9l. Had to buy a new crank sensor since my father and I broke it pulling the motor out because it feel and couldn't see it. So I decided to go ahead and do the mod to it. I'm not sure if I did it correctly or not. See the motor, doesn't quite want to idle and it very ruff starting, has to crank and crank before it goes. Then I have a clicking sound. Sounds like soild lifters and all instead of rollers. Now on the crank mod, you file it out and move the metal part towards the drivers side? Thats what I did and I can't find any post that tell me which way to go. So if anyone has any idea's on what that sound could be, and tell me which way to move the sensor (towards driver side or pass. side) I'd really be thankful.

Message: on the sensor-the end thats goes in the bell housing[remove rubber gourmet]moves toward pass.side.
try this and see if the motor quits down
if not remove valve covers and see if your getting oil to the rockers.if theres no oil there
then theres probaily no oil to the lifters.
check push rods too make sure the rods are not plugged
some times if the lifters set very long they can take along time pumping up
mentally go over everything you and your dad do to the motor, maybe there is something you over looked in the rebuild
bearings installed, oil pump, lifters, rocker arms etc you may think of something over looked or installed wrong.
if your getting oil up stairs, your more than likely getting it every where
hope this helps

Message: try removing the rocker, pull the push rod out and see if the hole in the ends are plugged,
run a wire threw the rod til it comes out the other end to remove the plug, this is how the rockers get there oil
from lifters threw push rods to rockers.
the rockers don,t need alot of oil at idle, but they do at higher RPMs for cooling

Message: smoht do you still got loud lifters?
how long have you run the motor since rebuild?
try running it at a slight faster than idle 1200rpms for a few minutes.
if this did,nt help then i would think on removing the oil pan and checking the pick-up tube and oil pump for a air leak, crack in the pick-up tube, pump where it mounts to the block etc
good luck these things can drive you nuts.

Message: Thanks for all the help vern, found out what the problem tonight. That metal plate thing that the starter goes though on the tranny. Part of it was rubbing the flywheel, took it off no sound. Grinded the part that was rubbing down putting it on tomorrow to see if it still makes the sound hopefully not!
