Subject: Do the 3.9 have the oil sludging proble IP: Logged
Message: I've just recently purchased a 2002 Dakota, 3.9 and have seen reports on the internet of oil sludging problems, where the screen clogs up and the pump fails, with the Dodge V-8. I was curious if oil sludging is a problem in the 3.9 V-6? Also, I can't get the ignition key to turn into the Accessory position. It's an automatic transmission. Any ideas? Thanks.

Message: I haven't heard of that problem being very common with the V6s as long as you aren't being an idiot and always forgetting to change your oil and filter on time.

Message: Oil sludging isn't a problem in any engine if oyu change your oil. Change it every 3000 miles, not every 5000-7500 miles like the manual may suggest for certain driving conditions, hardly anyone drives in those conditions but a lot of people think they do, thats when sludge happens.

Message: I've seen several articles on the web concerning sludging problems with Dodge V8's where people had done the scheduled oil changes, but a problem with the engine design had caused a problem with sludging. Some owners, mostly Durangos, have had engines seized up due to the screen becoming clogged and the pump failing.
I just found a Dodge Bulletin about it at: http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2000/09-05-00.htm
Seems to have something to do with a faulty intake manifold gasket, covers 94 thru 99 V6 and V8. The original article I found about people who'd lost engines to the problem is at: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/dodge_dur_oil.html
"Dodge Bulletin 09-05-00 dated February 25, 2000, addresses the replacement of the engine intake manifold plenum pan gasket in certain 3.9L, 5.2L and 5.9L gas engines to solve a problem with oil leakage. This is an internal leak, so many Dodge dealerships do not correctly diagnose the problem and have not honored warranty claims indicating that the owner of the truck is not properly maintaining the vehicle by not changing the oil." http://www.lubes-n-filters.com/newsletters/Dodge-Recall.html

Message: Ditto on regular oil changes. If you're into overkill, try a bypass filtration system. I love mine.

Message: Yes, the 3.9L V6 does get oil sludge build up. My -98 Dakota ( my baby) is as we speak in a repair shop having the engine torn out and rebuilt. My oil pump failed ( and yes I do change oil often..) and now it dont run anymore!
Makes me think not to buy anymore Dodges...

Message: I bought a 98 V6 with 160K miles on it a few months ago. The oil pressure gauge registered between 25-45 PSI, so I wasen't too concerned when I bought it (I've never been a beliver in 'excessive' oil pressure. It just kills HP) But after finding this board and reading up on what typical oil pressures to expect as well as some articles like yours about sludge problems, I decided to pull the pan on my 160K motor and see how it looked.
Pulling the pan was a pain itself, but when I got it off I was rewarded with about 2 inches worth of oily sludge in the bottom of the pan and a partially clogged pick up screen. After cleaning all of this up, my PSI went up around 8 PSI at idle (measured with an aftermarket psi gauge) and around 10-12 at speed.
I did not pull a cap to check for the dreaded copper showing on the bearings, and I wish I did now because pulling the pan sucked (Have to remove a ton of stuff and use an engine hoist)
I would recommend to EVERYONE with an engine over 100K to pull the pan and check/clean out the sludge. There are multiple factors that contribute to sludge (oil/water temp, driving conditions, oil change interval, type of oil, etc...) so don't fool yourself into thinking it can't happen in your Dak if you change the oil every 3K. It sould like the intake pan gasket problemis also a contributor.

Message: I have a 95 and it had an oil sludging problem dispite regular 3k oil changes. The engine flush and fill from pepboys (other shops offer it as well) fixed my problem. restored lost power and poor gas milage.

you just responded to a post over a year old!
now with that said i'll bet your one of them guys that makes alot of short trips
and the motor never got to F.O.T. and stayed there long enough to burn off the moisture!
oww and also ding a ling a motor that makes frequent short drives requires the oil changed sooner then 3000 miles! i'll bet you didnt know that either bright boy
do us all a favor sell the dodge and go buy another truck we dont need a brainless wonder like you slamming mopar

Message: Here's a thought, switch to a high detergent synthetic! I bought my 89 Dak with 98K on the odo, and switched to royal purple synthetic oil right after I bought it. I dyno'd the truck the day after I bought it and it showed 127.39hp at the wheels, before Royal Purple. I changed to synthetic the same day and dyno'd again. This time, 131.78hp at the wheels. This sh!t's amazing. Also, a week down the road, I noticed the oil was filthy @ss dirty, like it had never been changed. So I changed it again, and I would say a few weeks later the oil turned filthy dirty again, so I changed it again. I now have 102.5K on it, and only now can I go more than 2000 miles on the same oil. To answer the question about whether or not this stuff works, I replaced the pan the other day due to rusting, and the oil pump pick-up and screen looked sparkly clean. Synthetic Motor Oil, the proven no hassle sludge destroyer.

Message: Id you want to check to see if you have sludge in the bottom of your oil pan you can when you change the oil. just bend a small loop in the end of a piece of welding rod or a coat hanger and run it through the drain hole and scrap the bottom of the pan if you have a lot of sludge it will be all over the rod. You are going to have some in most any engine but you should be able to tell if it is excesive.
