Subject: lifter ticking? IP: Logged
Message: I know that there's been other posts about this, but I need expert opinions...LOL...
My 98 v6 dakota manual tranny has engine ping. Sounds like the lifters are ticking away when cold, and goes away after it's been warmed up.
Think heavier oil will help? I live in Ohio...
Replace the lifters?
OR will any of the mods help this condition?
It sounds like lifters, but maybe exhaust manifold leak that seals when hot?
It drives me nuts and sounds like crap!
I hate trompin it and it sounds like a tin can!
only thing done was had to replace CST for stalling/no idle condition.
ALSO.................
The only throttle body I can find is ones with 50mm openings. I don't want to "shave" the intake. Where/what years had the 48mm?
**Thanks all - this is a great board. I will join as soon as I get the spare cash!

Message: just did the spark plugs and relocated the IAT sensor. put it in the air hat at an angle, for clearance from the throttle cable.
Made a sh!tload of differense! throttle response is tons better and power is way up!
lots more get up and go!!

Message: I had issues with the lifters ticking but I took a lot of short in town trips. The lifters would always start making noise at about oil change time. Turns out that short trips are hard on the oil. I changed to 2500 miles between oil changes and now there isn't a problem.
Check on the oil you use, don't use Pennzoil, and try a oil cleaner to remove varnish that may have built up. I use Valvoline. I am thinking of changing to true Synthetic oil like Amsoil.
Good Luck

Message: I've always used valvoline oil.
I've tried different fuels (87,89,91) octanes/stations and hasn't made a difference.
I'll try changing it sooner, but I just checked it when I did the IAT relocate, and it's full and still looks clean. Just changed it <1000 miles ago. Wonder if I should go to a heavier oil, or just replace 'em.
IF that is what's ticking in there - sounds like pass side bank too -
It's so noticeable I can hear it over the injectors clicking.
