I need some help.

I have been experiencing a pinging sound in my 2000 3.9. My truck is a 4x4, SLT, Auto, with a volant intake, JBA headers, gibson cat-back, and superchips programmer installed.

About a month or so ago, I started to have a pinging sound at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle when accelerating. I have never had this before. I tried returning the PCM back to stock, but the noise is still there.

I checked the belly pan, my intake is clean and dry inside. I only run 93 octane, always from the same gas station.

I have tried using fuel system cleaner in a few tanks of gas with no result. I also just replaced the coolant temp sensor.

I have no codes, and other than the sound, the truck seems to run fine. I am starting wonder if I might be hearing something other than a ping, like possibly its my timing chain rattling. However, I only hear the noise under load, at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle when accelerating. I figure I could hear the timing chain sitting still and increasing the rpm.

Anybody have any ideas for me? I did some searching, but I haven't turned up anything that matched up.

Thanks!!

Shawn

Have you looked for a leak in your vacum hoses. Even the pcv hose is subject to cracking due to the heat.

Larry,

I'm already running the autolites---they appear to be burning well, light brown on the electrode.

XMR,

I have looked all over, and listened with a stethoscope for leaks, found nothing. I also put in a new PCV valve, and cleaned the TB.

My truck has never pinged until now, and I haven't changed anything recently, all of my mods have been there at least 6 months. I also have another computer laying around, I tried installing that, truck runs the same, same exact ping. Its driving me nuts.

IMO, if it seems to be happening under load, I'd check spark....have a friend help ya, if it's an auto, one foot on the brake, put it into gear and hold brake and floor it - see if it misfires. Check at dark where your friend can look under hood and check for arcing. Use a mist bottle to mist H2O on wires/cap... I'm not sure if these have a knock sensor on them, but sounds like misfire/timing being adjusted to compensate...maybe even take the cap off and look for burnt/carbon areas on cap/rotor.
AND if your 3.9 is like mine (1998) check #5 plug for coming loose - it's a bear....LOL
good luck!

My 99 v6 developed the same problem. There is a tech service bulletin at the dealers about this problem. Bad news. They can stop the ping but it will cost you power and mileage.

You can also try a colder thermo the stock is 195
if you don't live where it gets 0 and below most
trucks can get away with it.

Where I live it drops below 0 a lot and than I
get 17 running to cold to long.

Yes try anything before you let a dealer pull any
timing out you will lose both perf and gas mileage

it sounds to me like u were on the right track with the fuel system cleaner. Even though u have pretty high performance parts on ur truck you are running an extremly high octane for it. If u run run higher octane then need for the compression then it causes the full not burn dirtier which will cause carbon build up on the head and valves. The pinging noise u hear is that the problem has gotten so bad that the compression is really very high now in the engine because of the build up of carbon making the cylinder smaller so the octane u are using is accually not good enough for that high of compression. so there are 3 choices u have to make to fix the noise. 1 you could use even a high octane fuel, the only problem with that is that it will just burn dirty to and the pinging noise will return and u could ruin ur engine. 2 use a REALLY good fuel system cleaner one that concentrats on carbon build up on the valves. and 3 if that doesn't work take the heads off and have the valves and head cleaned off of all carbon and debree. After you have that done run a lower octane fule like 89 or 91. you won't see a different in the performance you might even see an improvement. If that doesn't work you will need to take it into a tech and have it looked and cause u might have to go with a overhale.

Good Luck
