Subject: 94 fuel pump prob.
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 94 Dakota V6. It hasn't been cranked for about 3 months. Tried to start it today and it is not getting fuel to the FI. The fuel pump is not running at all. I checked the fuses, dropped the tank and hot wired the pump which did run the pump. The fuel filter is clean. I have checked the pump relay and the shutdown relay. Both are ok. I noticed when the key is turned on the relays will energize for about 1 second then drop out but the pump does not pump during this time. I also hear several clicks near the throttle body but cannot determine exactly what it is.

Can someone help me with this problem and give me some direction on this. Thanks

Have the computer checked!

If the pump operates with direct current and the fuses and relays are good to go, it may be a computer issue.

Good luck!

The sound your hearin is the pump putting pressure back in the system.
You did a lot of testing for nothing if you didnt simply disconect the fuel line and put the key in the start position. Try that then get back to us.
Sounds to me like you have a bad battery, I know I know....you "have a good one" huh? Try another anyway just to be sure.

Btw, aim the fuel line in a safe direction.

I failed to mention that I did remove the line and there is no fuel at all. Also the bleeder valve has no pressure. For what it's worth, the battery was charged for 24 hours and then tested with a battery load tester. It checked out ok and turns the engine over great. I also failed to mention that it will run on ether all day long so not an ignition problem. Just not pumping for some reason. There is voltage momentarily at the fuel pump when the key is first turned on then the relays drop out and the voltage goes away.

I had a simular problem with a company van. (94 dodge 1500 w/ 5.9 motor). It was the exact same problem. Only the van sat for 2 weeks not 3 months. We had no fuel delivery, we checked the pump, the relays and we got nowhere. We then took it to a proffesional and that is when we were told it was the computer. I the computer replaced and the van runs like a million bucks. (And for the record, the mechanic that did the computer change is my best friend of 13 years, and he would not lie to me)

Trust me on this, have the computer checked, it sounds too much like our van issue.

Well, I found the problem. Very difficult to find indeed. It was the 5 pin connector to the fuel pump assy. I could "hot" wire the pump and it would run. I could check the voltage at the connector and there was voltage. Plug the connector in and nothing. Funny thing is there was no corrosion or rust and the connector visually looks good. I did make an assumption that steered me in the wrong direction. I thought that when the key was turned on the pump would run until the line was pressurized. WRONG. The pump will continue to run IF the key is in the start position or the computer reads the tach sensor. Can't hear the pump run while the engine is turning over.
