I've got a '89 Dodge Dakota with a 3.9 v6. Recently a knocking noise was noticed and under further investigation it seems to be coming from a belt driven device on the right side. ( Front view. Not the side with the alternator) I disconnected the belt and that worked until I put it in gear, then the knocking noise was much lounder. I reattached the belt and it is back to square one again. What is this thing, and how do I fix this..??

It could be the timing chain causing the noise.
The 3.9's are known to have bad ones. With the belt off, there is less of a load on the crankshaft until you put it in gear, hence the change you noticed. Is the noise constant? or does it change in volume as the engine idles? Does it make the noise when you first start it?
My 95 Dak had these symptoms and it was the timing chain. Hope this helps!
