Subject: Gen I&II Fogs w/High beam fix (maybe) IP: Logged
Message: All right, This is for the people with the Dakota Haynes manual. Page 12-23.
The left diagram close to the bottom there is a box that has HI, LOW ,three dots and a bar. There are two leads coming out of it. On the left wire(L4 14VT) it splits into two , one going to the headlights an one going to the fogs. If you connect the L4 14VT* fog wire to the L3 14RD/OR*(High beam wire) with a couple of 3-way wire taps, would the fogs come on with the highs? Ok, now that makes another problem; juice would then flow back and turn on the low beams also, so both lows and highs would be on, along with the fogs.
Sooo, Is ther anyway you could put a large enough diode between that splice and the dimmer switch (on the fog light wire)?

Message: yeah, that would take care of the first problem, but I think you would still have a problem with the High beams coming on with the low beams....
What you could do is wire up a large enough FET Transistor with the high beams
It's not to hard to do, connect the drain to +12v, gate to the high beam {you may need a 10k resistor to ground with it} and the source to your fog lamps. you still need the diode in between to keep the low's off when the highs are on
Not sure on how much current the fog lamps pull, but radioshack have some FET's that will handle 3-4 amps with a heatsink on them for a couple bucks.
Or you could just put your fog lamps on their own switch.

Message: Hey, thanks a bunch for the help. What kind of diode would I need to use? I think i would rather wire the fogs up to hier own switch though. Would the stock fog switch be able to handle all of the power from fogs, or would I need to use a relay?

Message: Use a rectifier diode, they can handle the higher currents, you can run them in parallel if you need a higher current rating.
As far as the stock fog switch, I couldn't tell you since I don't have one (or fog lights for that matter..) you can try to remove the switch and see if it has the rating stamped on it (should) or you may be able to guess from the guage of wire going into it.
if in doubt, just put a relay in.

Message: Ok I was wondering how you could wire up just a different switch? My fog light switch went out and I would rather just wire them to treir own switch so that I could also have them on with the brights. Thanks

Message: That is what I am wanting to know also. I think I am going to just wire a relay up to put the fogs on there own circuit. It will be easy.

Message: well i dont know how your wiring is, i didnt have stock fogs, i put mine on myself, so i just ran my own wires, i just knew the switch could handle the load. try a wiring diagram, cant be too difficult.
