Subject: Mopar distributor conversion kits IP: Logged
Message: Has any one seen or used the elctronic distributor conversion kits that were once sold by mopar? I'm interested in knowing how well they worked, and how they addressed the odd fire configuration of the engine. I guessing it was a special reluctor.

Message: i have,nt used the mopar kit,but i built one using a 318 dist, slanted 6 reluctor and the mopar performance recurve springs and don,t use the vaccuum advance, and the ecu box and wiring harness from a junked car, worked great, only cost i had was the springs $5 bucks,if you bought every thing from a junk yard may-be $50
if you go this route you can put the 318 carb on and do away with the complete computer and all its wiring,
the only problem with the 318 carb is you,ll have to make a bracket for the throttle linkage to hook to the carb,i took the set-up off the old carb and welded it to the 318 carb
i notice better response and performance with this.
good luck

Message: An odd fire 3.9 fires at 128 deg and 112 deg slant 6 is 120 deg, how did you get around this?
Also I’ve had real good success with the stock carb by unplugging it from the ecu and adjusting the mixture solenoid manually to get the mixture I want. I use a led meter on the o2 sensor to monitor the mixture. works as a variable jet.
The biggest improvement to the truck was when I added a Jacobs ignition and set the plugs to .055" ,..huge performance and milage improvement

Message: remove the vacuum advance, use the tin cover from the 3.9 dist to cover the advance hole on the 318 dist[notice the notch for the dist cap location]its different between the two.
also you,ll have to drill the dist plates [so they can,t move,do this when the advance is still on the dist so the plates are center]once the advance has been removed screw the plates together[lock tite or head the screw]
the differents between slanted 6 and the 3.9 [degrees]don,t seem to be a issue, tho i had a problem with spark knock when i used the vacuum advance.
called mopar tech line they told me to recurve the dist[springs]and not to use the vacuum advance and this should cure the problem,so i removed the advance and did what i stated above.this cured the problems with spark knock and got the power back and more.
i ran the computer on the truck for a month or so for the carb, but the computer did,nt control the timing advance any more, until i bought a 318 carb to install, this worked fine,
when i installed the carb i removed the computer and the wiring for it.
i ran the truck about a year, sold it and its still running [local] its been about 5yrs since i done this.
thats about all i can tell you

Message: Thanks Vern, thats good info. I'm going to give it a try. If it works well, I might draw up a reluctor with the degree offsets built in and machine it up, and see if that makes any differance.
Thanks again for the info
