Message: I saw the report on CBS last night about Dakota ball joints. I have a '98 Sport with 42,000 miles. I keep it garaged and take really good care of it. I haven't noticed any noises but I think I will have someone look at the front end. My questions are, should I take it to a Dodge dealer and trust that they will give me an honest appraisal or to a private mechanic. Also, if the ball joints need to be replaced, is there a better type that can be installed which will last or do the same low quality ones have to be installed only to go through the same pre-mature failure?

Message: The uppers failed on my 02 SXT also. 37K.
I ordered Moog replacements in October. Summit canceled the order since Moog has not manufactured it yet. 00 and up are different than the older ones.
Been calling Moog every week to see when the part will go into production. Shoulda been 2 months ago. However, they say production should commence any day now. Will update the board when they do.

Message: Just got off the phone with Moog engineering. They are aware of the high failure rates of the later model trucks.
The ball joint will not go into production for months. He says they cannot find a manufacturer to produce an acceptable dust boot for the new joint and will not produce it until they do. Sounds strange but I'm just relaying the info.

Message: Robert,
Use the Moog K7242 ball joint that is listed for the 99 Dak, they fit the 2002.
There is no difference in the upper ball joint between 99 and 2002. I don't know who told you there was, but I am proof that there is no difference.
I put these on my 2002 Sport and they fit and work great.
you can buy them at www.rockauto.com

Message: Robert,
You might also want to take a look at www.partsamerica.com. They carry McQuay Norris ball joints for the Dakota's. Since mine is a 1998, I only have the part numbers for that and they are: Upper P/N is FA2132 and lower P/N is FA2134.

Message: Scott&Kevin,
Thanks, I will check it out.
The Moog engineer said the part was different for 2000 and later trucks. Maybe I'll call engineering again to check it out. I've gotta do somethin', the upper right is getting worse.
Thanks again.

Message: Hey now, is there a difference between Mcquay Norris and Moog ball joints, or are they just about the same as far as durability and quality?? I have been reading a lot of stuff and some people prefer Moog, others Mcquay. As for price, I have found that Mcquay is just a little bit more expensive than Moog, but price does not always mean better. I'd appreciate some honest feedback on this. Thanks!!

Message: Hey "Search", if i use the search method will i find a$$holes like you? was wondering where i could find one! the last i knew this board was for people that wanted to know and wanted to find things faster. Guess you'll be telling me to check the owners manual next like some other a$$hole did. For all you a$$holes, get off the board since you already know it all! your a waste of page space.

Message: Hey guy's here is the scoop, Dodge and the home office is still reluctant to do anything. The MOOG ball joints I wanted have about a three month wait on them due to manufacturing backlog, and dodge repacement parts have a wait that is even longer. My guess is that no one will do a damn thing until they have to, and right now Dodge is making too much money replacing the old ones to give a hoot or hollar. We are going to just have to wait and see, if enough people call and complain then maybe we will see some progress eventually, my brother is studying industrial design and machining, and he says that those joints are so small only a few people have the equipment necessary to make them, and they want alot of money for them (go figure), so waiting is my best sugestion.

Message: Hey Tim, I've also got a 98 sport but it has 81K on it and i took mine to a dodge dealer to get an alignment done because i had gotten new tires and didn't want them to wear out right away. They tried doing an alignment and found i had one bad upper and the lowers were really close to being out of spec. They quoted me almost $2k to do the job cause they said i needed new control arms, sway bar(cause it's attached to the control arms), all 4 ball joints, and the labor and this would have taken all day to do. i told them to take my truck off the rack right away and i'd go somewhere else to get it done for a hell of alot cheaper. Even if they were to use aftermarket parts it would still have been $1300. Think they were trying to pad thier pockets just a bit?, i think so because i went to a private shop and i could have gotten it done for under $600 using aftermarket parts and just drilling out the old ball joints and replacing them, no control arms or sway bar needed. The reason i said "could have" is about 5 days ago my truck was parked in my apt complex lot and was intentionally hit by a 19 yr old punk ass kid who was drunk and pissed off cause he backed into a pole at a different complex with his 89 blazer. He also damaged 6 other vehicles and a garage before he bailed out of his truck and ran when an officer tried to stop him because he was dragging a bumper underneath his truck.

Message: Hey all, here is the 411 I just got from two local dealers. The joints on my 98 are going out and neither one had any idea when CD would get just the ball joints in. I have an extended warranty on my truck so they said they could replace the whole control arm assy but since these use the same crappy ball joints, whats the point?? I asked them if I were to purchase after market ones, could they install them under the warranty? Of course, they said this would void my warranty to have this work done. Oh, I also asked them if they knew who the manufacturer is for the current ball joints and they said they had no idea who it is, or who is going to be the new supplier for the new joints. All they said they knew is that the new joints will be more durable than the current ones (one hopes so anyway).

Message: I purchased a 99 Dakota new, and I thought it was unusual, but they had to replace the ball joints the first year I had the truck. Now I wonder what shape they are in now. They didn't replace one, or so they told me, but since I travel on lots of dirt roads, I guess I need to have them rechecked. The dealer never told me there were other problems out there. I did notify daimler about this problem. They claimed not to have heard of the problem! I would think they should be responsible to replace them even now if they are a problem.

Message: My dakota has 133,ooo miles with the original ball joints and no sign of looseness yet. I think that DC had severla suppliers and one of them made inferior ball joints and they have been too lazy to try to find out which supplier is gving them defective ones. Perhaps they are trying to dodge lawsuits. (sorry I could not resist the pun)
