Subject: rebuild t-case? IP: Logged
Message: ok, i have tried to balance my prop shaft, and that didnt work, i just changed the fluid and my transfer case still makes noises when i am going over about 15, accelerating or slowing down a noise like the gears are grinding or something. if i just cruise in either 4high or 4low at about 20-30 and not change my speed, the noise goes away. do i or can i rebuild my transfer case? how much does that cost? any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve

Message: You should be able to do it yourself they are not
that complicated just be sure you check the
planitary gear cluster out very good or replace it
that is usualy what goes first in these cases
Other tahn that bearings and seals

Message: There is a constant volocity joint that needs to
be rebuilt on these shafts just replacing the U
joints is a temp solution and will not last long.
Your best bet is to have the whole works redone
or replace it $150 to $225

Message: I've recently had a problem with my t-case also. In 2H it made a bunch of noise (clunking) when accelerating but not when coasting. Ive made a temporary solution of taking off the front prop and driving in 4H, no noises (2H started making metal to metal grinding noisies after the front prop removal)Still need a good t-case though... NP231D for my 93 V6 to slap onto my 5spd. Also need a TB cable for my v6 to v8 tb swap. While im here, what's better MSD ignition or a jet chip, i heard its an either or situation, they do not play well together... Any help would be appricated! THANKS

Message: yeah, sure man. i called DTS (drive train specialists) they are in michigan(11 mile and groesbeck). they said that a rebuild kit for my t case would be 80. they can probabily ship one to your brother. but first, be sure the noise is coming from the case. i went to my local 4x4 store and had one of the guys go for a ride with me, he told me that it was my front u joints, not my t case that was makin the noise. just make sure that the noise sounds like it is coming from around the t case, not the joints, they cost 20 a piece and there are 3 in the front driveshaft. if you want the number, it is (586) 778-0540. good luck, Steve

Message: The 231 is "virtually" bulletproof. to get 1 go bad is rare, Mine has 217K on it. I took it apart to change the output shaft and everything inside still looked brand new.
Good Luck,

Message: well, in 4 low, the t case adds another 2.77 gear ratio onto the final drive so it will go a lot slower. with my 5 speed in 4 low, i can only go about 25-30. Steve

Message: I just bought a 1995 Dakota Club Cab with 140000 miles and the 4WD is out...Guy I bought it from said he took it in and the chain is broke...T-Case is really wet outside and appears to have been run dry(front output shaft seal out), and makes a grinding/crunching noise in 2H and a really horrendous noise in both 4 ranges...Is this worth rebuilding or should i look for a completely different t-case?..I have a feeling bearings may be shot and the gears worn out, as he apparently had been driving it that way for a year..

Message: I know for a fact my front output bearing is bad 'cause I can "wobble" the yoke by hand. There is NO front driveshaft that came with the vehicle when I got it,I found out also that I need the drivers side axle/bearing replaced. So,about $100 for the t-case parts,$250 for a rebuild d-shaft and about $150 for the axle.Damn.
