Subject: Is it my thermostat ?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 dakota. A heat problem recently started happening. Here is the synopsis.

1. I let the engine warm up for about 10 minutes, and the water temp gauge reads about 2/5

2. Turning on the blower fan does not produce any heat until you drive for about 5 minutes, yet the temp gauge is reading the same.

3. Ocassionally, about once every 2 days, the Check Gauges lite will illuminate and the Temp Gauge reads OVERHEAT. Turning off the blower fan and the temp selection to cold, brings the temp gauge back down to normal. I can then reapply the heat and everything seems normal.

Could this be my thermostat ? Any recommendatations apprectiated.

Thanks in Advance

I would recommend that you check your coolant level in the radiator as well as in the overflow bottle, these symptons sound exactly like low coolant level.

The thermostat could be a good check it might be sticking, low coolant levels are one possibility, also, everything is run by computer in these engines and you may want to check the sending unit for the gage and the sensor that sends the signal to the computer. Usually if the truck was overheating, turning the fan off and temp to cool would be least likely to bring the temp down... turning the heat on and fan on blows hot air away from the engine, thus bringing the temp down... something to think about. There could also be a clog in the radiator and preventing the water form cycling right until under the pressure of acceleration while you're driving, may just need to flush the system.

Good Luck

I would get the system back flushed and a new
thermostat installed,

It does sound like a low coolent level or some
blockage in the system

thanks for all the good responses. It was low coolant level. Should have checked the simple things first. Thanks again everyone.
