Subject: Rear End Noise IP: Logged
Message: The rear pinion drive shaft in my 99 Dakota (w/ 60,000 miles on it) recently snapped clean into two pieces. After Dodge told me they couldn't do anything for me I replaced the gears in my differential myself. But now it is making a loud howling noise. I have adjusted everything about 3 times and I can't get the howling to go away, any suggestions????

Message: My dad has a Dakota that did that, and he just replaced the whole rearend with a lower mileage one, so if you can find a good price on a junkyard one or something with lower miles, just pick that up

Message: Did you set the pinion height and gear mesh and
the pre load on the carrier.
You cant just bolt a set of gears in without doing
this or they will be noisy and not last long.
Your 99 should have had a 7/70,000 and should be
replaced by the dealer

Message: Did you use the same bearings? If so that could be it as well. You may need to get a new set of bearings.

Message: I thought the same thing about the 7/70,000 powertrain warranty. After trying to ask about 15 different people at Dodge, not one person seemed to know if that existed in 1999(how convienient for them). I can't find any paperwork that verifies any 7/70,000 coverage. If anybody knows of any please let me know and I'll raise hell with Dodge.

Message: I didn;t think the 7/70 started until the 2002 model year...My 2001 is completely out of warranty in January according to my paperwork.

Message: It might be the pinion bearings. I have a '98 that is making a whining noise from the read end, and I was told that it is the pinion bearings. The 7/70,000 powertrain did not take affect until the 2002 model year.
