Subject: Shifting problems? IP: Logged
Message: My '96 2WD, 3.9 has started to shift differently. It seems to upshift too soon, and it seems to downshift at the wrong times. It will shift into overdrive at the same speed it always has, around 46 mph.
For instance, if I turn a corner, and accellerate normally, the truck will speed up as normal. Then all of a sudden, without me pressing down harder on the gas it will downshift. It will do this around 1500 rpm it seems. This never used to happen, unless I pushed harder on the gas. Is it normal for the 3.9 to not make any real power until 2000 rpm?
If I turn a corner real slow, sometimes, not always, it will downshift, and then VERY quickly upshift again. Like it is hunting for the correct gear.
Also, the truck seems to be down on power. I travel on roads that have alot of hills. To be able to keep the truck up to speed, I have to turn off the overdrive. Unless I really step down on it, I think a Chevette would run away from me. I used to get around 200+ miles to a tank. Now I am lucky to get 140-150 miles to a tank.
I just replaced the cap, rotor, and plugs. I used stock Champian plugs. The wires are Taylor. They are almost new. It also has a K&N FIPK filter. Traveling on the interstate, the truck runs smooth. It idles smooth.
Any help would be appreciated.

Message: Pluged cat o2 sensor
The shifting almost sounds like your speed sensor
is going bad

Message: Larry, thanks for the info. Where is the speed sensor located? About how much does a new one cost?
Is the O2 sensor that might need to be replaced, is it the one in front of the converter? I think my truck has two O2 sensors.
Thanks again.

Message: Yes first upstream o2 between motor and cat the
second one downstream just tells the comp that the
cat is working
I think on the 96 the speed sensor is still in the
trans kind of where there used to be a speedo cable, think around $40

Message: Speed sensor...what's the location of it on a 98, Larry? That definitely sounds like part of the problem in my transmission... I'm also going to have the fluid and filter changed sometime in the next couple weeks I hope since I'm on Christmas break.

Message: I am not sure exactly what year they moved them
if its not on the drivers side of the trans its
in the the differential
on the 98 differential just take a look they have
a 3 or 4 wire plug on them and will adversly
effect the shifting of the trans because they send
goffy signals to the comp.
Some will even for no reason while crusing just
downshift.
