WHAT U NEED TO DO IS USE THE BOLTS THAT ARE ALREADY IN THE BLOCK, I THINK THEY ARE BEHIND THE TOP TIMING GEAR HOLDING THE TIMING PLATE THAT YOU WILL DISCARD, READ LARRY'S TECH INFO CAREFULLY THAT'S WHAT I FOLLOWED AND MY TRUCK RUNS LIKE A CHAMP EVEN AT 225,000 MI.

Thanks, I bought the parts today. It appears that the chain tensioner is part of an existing thrust plate that is already on the engine. The tensioner was added to this part in later years. The parts guy questioned the part number specified in this post because it showed no difference in the exploded parts view on the computer at the dealer but when he actually pulled the part it has the tensioner on it. I'm going to dig into the engine in the morning...wish me luck.

I did the job today. Everything worked out great. I put my laptop on the workbench and used Larry's instructions for reference. I could have done the job without it but it made everything go so much smoother. Excellent instructions Larry, I've never seen better. Thanks

Well, I'm ready to put my 3rd timing chain on my 94 3.9L Dakota (154000 mi), I noticed the last time I had it apart that the timing chain was awfully dry.

Is there some kind of oil journal that could be clogged that I should look for? or will that be fixed by the new tensioner. (I noticed a little indentation on the back of it just below the cam opening?

Also, What's a good silent type replacement? I'm looking at the NTP 103072 from NAPA. any thoughts?

4.7

is basicly the same as the older multi port
injection motors

The base timing is set by a sensor and the
computer controles the timing from there
you can not set the timing

3 chains in 150,000 miles, the chain should get
oil 2 ways

1 splash bottom of oil pan

drips from cam trust plate

sounds like somewhere along its life the oil was
not changed and gumed up the channel wher the
drops come in and drip on the chain be sure this
channel is clean when you install the tensioner
and yes the tensioner is also the new trust plate
and should be used on all V6 motors when chain
and gears are replaced

try a cloyes true street roller and gears straight
up key way 0 not pluss or minus 4

I just put one in my truck with a hotter cam and
the double roller just fit its vary tight indeed
I reused the tensioner that was in there at 30,000
it had absolutly no ware at all

2000 miles on new chain gears cam and lifters
128,000 on motor and last gas mileage check
was 24.4 mpg 95 4x4

WOW Larry! You really know your stuff!! Thanks for the info, but, I have questions. Is it possible to check the timing without tearing so much apart? And if the timing is off, should the whole computer be replaced since it can't be adjusted?. I'm asking for my husband. I'm tired of him sinking money in his truck and not getting it fixed. Here is what he says about it...

When cold, backing up or driving forward, truck shakes, shimmies or shudders. If driven for a few miles the shakes stop.
Sometimes will not downshift in aggressive driving situations. Sometimes will not up shift under moderate acceleration or no acceleration until accelerator is let off completely.
When in overdrive, truck has little power on moderate slope. Sometimes it will exhibit no power at all and will not maintain speed, as the accelerator is pressed down, the truck will downshift intermittently, this happens in or out of cruse control, the truck will repeat this over and over.
On a 1500 mile drive in drive gear with cruse control, the truck started missing or hesitating. When the accelerator was pushed to the floor, the truck did nothing. When the accelerator was pressed a second time, the truck accelerated aggressively as it should.
Poor and erratic gas mileage. With similar driving conditions, the gas mileage ranged from high 13mpg to low 16mpg.
In over 20,000 miles, never a diagnostic code.

Here is what he's done so far...

Parts and procedures performed:
Replaced:
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug wires
Ignition Coil
Distributor Cap
Rotor
Up Stream O2 Sensor
Speed sensor on transmission and rear end
Catalytic converter and muffler

Procedure:
Cleaned idle air control- Starr Motors
Replaced Transmission fluid and filter- Starr Motors(dealer)

What I have checked.
Air temperature.
MAP sensor
Throttle position sensor.
Gas pressure. 48,5 #, with no bleed down.
Compression on # 4 cylinder.

He has taken to the dealer and a transmission shop, who both ran diagnostics, but they found nothing wrong. Now he thinks it's the timing or the sensors on the transmission. The transmission shop said that if the sensors were borderline that they may pass their diagnostics but still could be the problem.

All I know is that he's spent a lot of money and the problem is that same as it was when he bought it. (Bought it used. We were told it came from New Oleans. Maybe Katrina did something to it?) I guess you should know it is a Dodge Dakota, 2003 3.9 liter V6.
If you have any ideas or can point us in a general direction of what he should try next we sure would appreciate it.
Thanks!
Rachel

Can you verify that the trans shop used ATF+4 trans fluid? Anyhting else will wreak havoc and make the trans do weird things. You may want to check the TPS also.

Timing is controlled by the PCM and cannot be set. You can check it with a regular ole timing light. If you've turned the distributor trying to adjsut the timing, you've thrown the Fuel Injector sync off.

How many miles on this truck?

If the truck came from New Orleans are you near there?

Hey Daddio, Thanks for responding! Here's my husband to give you the details....

A dodge dealer changed the transmission fluid. I checked the throttle position sensor and wires to the PCM.
I would like to check the timing, but none of the manuals give specs. on what the timing should be.
The truck has 53000 on it and I bought it 2 years ago with 28500 milies.
I live in Virginia.

I just wanted to thank you so much for the dodge tensioner article.
I started the project quite by accident about 2 years ago. (Don't
worry, it wasn't your article, it was a combination of timing and
having trouble getting the harmonic balancer off) I am just about
to restart the project and get the harmonic balancer off. I have the
right tool now and the extra blots.

My only real question is on checking the endplay. I see that it is a
dial gauge, but I am at a loss for how you are moving the engine
components back and forth to check the endplay. I have seen
some youtube videos that show the bearings being wiggled back
and forth a bit. Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated!

Okay. I was finally able to figure it out based on the pictures and a
good bit of reading. You can just move the spindle/lobe thing
back and forth without turning the engine. I was thinking a 360
degree turn on the y axis, not movement on the x axis.

doh!
