Message: The sprokets are not press fit they just slide on
and off may stick a little from oil residue
build up
You can use a steering wheel puller in the bolt
holes on the damper just do not use a gear puller
on the outside of the damper
12 and 12 o-clock both sprokets is TDC and #1 on
dist and you should turn it there before removing
the gears

Message: I have an '88 Dakota LE with the 3.9 engine. Do I realy need to go through the entire procedure of degreeing the cam just to do a stock timing chain set R&R?

Message: I got the vibration damper off! To break the 32mm bolt loose i used a long torque wrench (ratcheting style) that i didnt care about and attached it and rotated it until it caught on the passenger side frame rail, then blipped the starter to rotate the crank - broke it clean loose. Used a harmonic balancer puller and got the damper off, then the timing cover. My chain has about 1.5" of play in it! I can almost lift it off of the gears...
My next step is to pull the plugs out to rotate it all until the timing marks line up, and the rotor points to the #1 post. Then removing the gears.

Message: Peanuts - No, you do not, this is just to maximize performance from your motor. Also, I am not for sure, but you do have the pre-magnum motor. I do not know if the tensioner for the 3.9 magnum will fit on the pre-mag LA motors. Otherwise yes, you can just change out the chain and gears following the how to, just only once the gears and chain are removed, slide the new on, bolt it down and re-assemble.

Message: Lets say by some stroke of genius, my chain did not go on correctly? When I took the original chain off, I lined up the 2 timing marks in a straight line in the middle (cam gear dot down, crank gear dot up) and then installed the new gears/chain that way - the truck coughs and tries to fire, but will not start. Whats my course of action?
It was suggested I am 180' off time, but how do I remedy this?> do i just take the gears off and rotate the cam and crank another full turn, or rotate the crank half or full turn and leave the cam> im kind of frustrated>
I noticed, even if the cam/crank are given another full turn, their keyed - and the new ones when installed slid right on, and went right along with keys and the timing marks of the old set.... why would it be ANY diffrent?

Message: try moving the spark plug wires to compensate for the timing. did you make shure the dist. was pointing to number one?I think you should move #1 plug four spots clocwise then follow the same firing order from that point.

Message: The correct way is both marks up 12 O-Clock
If you line them togather crank at 12 cam at 6
you will need to pull the dist and turn 180
Unless you took it apart at 12 and 6 and did not
turn anything
Yes your backfire you are 180 out pull dist and
turn 180 it only can go in 2 ways you will also
have to set the injector sync once you pull the
dist

Message: I pulled them apart that way, I got it started, it runs smooth and quiet - but each time its kind of hard to start - and last night i started it, and it ran great, then i shut if off. an hour later it wouldnt start for anything, just crank and crank and crank...... i havent tried yet today
when it cranks i get exhaust coming out the back so i think someone turned the distributor to make up for the slack in the chain so i am a bit advanced or retarded

Message: I just replaced the cap and rotor on the distributor... fired her right up - i have a misfire in one of the cylendars, and it wants to die at lower rpms - seems as if that the spark plugs are all carboned up (only 10-15k old?>>) but with the timing being off, the one i pulled out had all kinds of crap on it. Im going to pull them all out and clean them with a toothbrush and some gas or starting fluid, then dry them off. hopefully that will resolve my problem.

Message: Seems no one knows for sure; is the 3.9 rattle just a noise or does it indicate a problem with the chain, that could lead to premature failure, etc?
I think half the guys I ask say it's just a harmless noise and half say it means my timing chain is gonna fall off!
Any more info available? Opinions?
Thanks.

Message: well seeing how this started out with a noise. What is this rattle you guys are talking about. I have a nocking/poping noise and which i beleive it was my cracked manafold which was one HUGE crack (i have a new one comeing in on friday) but someone said the noise could be the timeing chain. This is not a rattle at all on mine sry if im thread jacking but it seems like alot more people are reading this one ahah. Just wondering because if it is my timeing chain im going to have to do all of this. Might i add the noise on my truck goes away when the RPM goes up its only at idle. Is this the case with everyone elses truck?

Message: go 1.5
The length is not criticle just so it hits the
piston to find true TDC
you don't have to degree it this is for totle
gear heads that just cant see losing those few
extra ponies
bring the piston up slow dont ram the stop
have all the plugs out so it turns easy I usualy
just screw the crank bolt in for turning
no washe the crank sproket will com off right
over this bolt if you need to make changes
There are pics on the home page how to's of
