Subject: Is it the starter??
IP: Logged

Message:
OK, I have a 98 CC with a V6, got close to 100K miles on it. Just recently I have had a small problem starting the truck. Most of the time it cranks and starts fine. But sometimes when I turn the key, all I get is a grinding noise and no engine cranking. The battery is good. After some key turning several times, it will start. Could it be the starter? Does anyone have some input or comments on this?

if the starter turns over but grinds the bendix
is bad.

Its a spring loaded gear assy that engauges to the
ring gear, posible brokin spring or rusty or gumed
up.

At 100k I would just replace the whole starter.

I am not sure if the starter is turning on the times it does not crank. It is just a grinding/clicking noise. All I know is that it pisses me off when it does not crank over and I do not like it. Is it hard to change out the starter on a 98 V6?

I wish it was easy to get up under there to see. The truck is lowered and my garage is full of stuff right now to lift it up. Which is easier to replace...the starter or the bendix? Or does it really matter? If I am going to replace the bendix, I might as well replace the starter for a few extra bucks??

The bendix is part of the starter, I have also
seen a few of these starters with flat spots and
will do nothing when the key is turned.

With the last comment it could alse be the
solonoid

Best bet replace the whole starter and be done
with it
