Subject: Engine ping IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2002 Dakota with 35,000 km. At around 33,000 km, I started to notice an engine ping when going up hills or hard acceleration. This only happens when the engine has been running for a while. I am looking for solutions. Thanks.

Message: Try a set of plugs 1 range colder
Autolite 3923 gap at factory or the AP3923 with
just the platnium tip and gap .005 over.
Stock heat range is 3924 or AP3924

Message: I am not sure but what they usualy will do is take
some timing out and make your truck run doggie.
The reg 3923 are $.99 each at walmart.
What they might also do is if your truck don't
have what they call the truck plug with the
extended tip they will install them and in most
it will cure the ping.
The extended tip truck plug will run cooler from
the incoming air fuel hitting it and cooling it down.
See what they say but if I were you I would not
let them retard the timing it will effect perf
and gas mileage.

Message: You can't retard the timing anyway because it is controled by the computer.

Message: Follow Larry's advise, he will set you straight. I have a 92 dak that will ping under load in hot weather. I had a Jacobs Pro-Street Ignition at the time running the 3924's. After being told about this board, I tried the 3923 as suggested and it cured my pinging problem.

Message: J.D. the dealer can retard the timing by reprogramming the computer. What Larry was trying to do is to avoid that because once they do it your Dak will be a dog when driving it.

Message: Exactly,
The dealer will pull out a few degree's timing and try to
avoid that at all costs.
Keep the timing and work around it
try mid range fuel it will also help
Do anything you can before you resort to having a dealer
retard your timing it will drop your performance and gas mileage

Message: I have a '94 Dakota with a 3.9. I'm not sure if that is what you have or you have the newer generation of V6. I had a detonation problem myself which I discovered had been attributed to a vacuum leak at the bottom of the intake. The intake is a two piece item, and it is not uncommon for them to leak. I did some
extensive modifications to a spare intake that I had, double-gasketed the bottom pan cover and torqued down the bolts w/an inch-pound torque wrench. I have a Superchips reprogrammed computer which has an overly aggressive spark curve and I run a blower on the motor with moderate boost. I have also installed a J&S knock sensor which automatically retards your timing when detonation is detected, allowing you to run maximum timing at all times, regardless of fuel quality. It does have it's limits, in the sense that I cannot run greater boost on my blower without reprogramming my computer. If you like to hot rod your truck, go to www.hughesengines.com and Dave Hughes will be able to help you out quite a bit.
