Message: The "gears" and the "sure grip" are two different things. The "gears" provide the proper ratio between the transmission output and the tires. The "sure grip" is a type of limited slip unit that can be in the differential.
If you get a set of gears and/or a sure grip for the differential in your truck, just make sure it is for the proper type that your truck has.

Message: Mike I dont think you listened to White very well.
Gears and suregrip are 2 different things.
The carrier that the ring gear bolts to is where you would find the suregrip therefore you would need to buy a sure grip sepeate from the ring and pinion that are commonly reffered to as "gears".
You need to get any service manual for pretty much any rear drive vehicle ( even though one for your Dak would be REAL handy, :-D) to see what we are talking about, it would help you a great deal as you seem to have not much of a clue.
Good luck to you though.

Message: Fazdak, thanks for the input....let me clear up what i was trying to say cause obviously it didnt come out right. What im trying to say is that richmond sells gears....got that and i already know that the gears are different from sure grip....what im trying to ask is does richmond sells the ring gear or whatever with the gears as a seperate item....or do i need to go shopping someone else like Chrysler or what?

Im guessin its still not comming out right?
Ring and pinion gears commonly refered to as "gears" period. A ring or a pinion gear are almost never sold seperatly so they are a set always and when refered to.
Get that? What you may be thinking of is the installation kit or something?
Richmond (and a lot of others) sells gears, ring and pinion. Dana (and a lot of others) sells limited slip, sure grip, trac lok or whatever there particular name may be. I dont know what else you need to know.
Seriously, Im not being hatefull or anything but if you had a service manual you can see all the parts in an exploded view that will help you explain exactly what it is you need to know.

Message: Gears are exactly what they say Gears.
The ring gear bolts to the carrier, the pinion
goes in the case and has the yoke on it where the
U Joint bolts in Ring and Pinion always sold in
a matched set
carrier could be open or a sure grip unit or add
the dana power trax to the stock carrier posi
well that should confuse you even more

Message: You can order both the gears and a limited slip unit from www.4wheelparts.com online. Look for the Dana Trac-Loc unit as it is the least expensive. After your purchase you will to see a qualified mechanic to do the installation as it needs to be done correctly or the gears will wear out within just a few miles.
I hope this helps.
PS: you should have a Chrysler 8.25 rear end in your Dakota but the mechanic you chose should be able to tell you for sure which one you have. Find out before you order parts so you get the right ones.

Message: The rear end should be listed under the hood or in
the glove box on a sticker.
8.25 I would bet with a 10 bolt cover.
Just get ahold of Ryan he has everything you need
tell him I sent you maybe he will give you a
little better price.
You need to set the pinion height you cant just
bolt the gears in. and .015 preload on each side
of the carrier.
He also handles the powertrax posi unit and is a
good guy to deal with you will get your parts fast
I have written to 4wheelparts and they do not
answer emails or there phone so I would never deal
with them.
Have tried many times to contact them with no luck

Message: I personally dont care for the PowerTrax unit, engages very roughly (for the cheaper version) sometimes noisy when engaging and disengaging.
The Dana unit is cheaper, smoother operation.
If I were you I would take it to a pro, I doubt you have a press or dial indicator and you will need em and some to perform the carrier and gear set install.

Message: I also like the dana unit very strong set up
If you don't know rear ends don't attempt it
yourself it may end up costing you a lot more if
she blows..
You need to set the pinion height from the
centerline of the carrier bearings, a good shop
will have a guage they just drop in with a dial
indicator to set height and a honed out bearing
to use to figure out the correct shims to use
befor you pop your new bearing on and wreck it
taking it off to add or remove a shim.
Have a good shop do the install or someone who
knows how.
Just tell Ryan Larry from J&J sent you and ask
him if he can give you a little better price most
times he will knock something off.
