Subject: Help!! Home Brew Cold Air Intake IP: Logged
Message: I've purchased what I believed was everything needed to assemble a CAI: 3" Fernco Elbow, 3" ABS pipe and an APC Intimidator Air filter.
My first problem is that the diameter of the Air Hat is 3" and opening diameter of the Fernco Elbow is 3.5". What can I do to take up 1/2 in. of slack?
How have others, that made a home brew CAI, attached the elbow to the air hat sice they are different diameters? I thought about cutting a 1-2" piece of ABS to glue around the air hat opening but I'm not sure that is what I want to do.
My second problem is mounting the air filter to the ABS pipe. The flange on the air filter has an inside diameter of 3" and the outside diameter of the ABS pipe is 3.5" and inside is 3".
What can I do to attach the filter to the ABS? If I could find a piece of pipe with an outside diameter of 3" I'd could make a sleeve that could fit in the opening of both the filter and pipe, but other than that I'm not certain how to connect the two.
What can I do the assemble this mod? Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Brad

Message: i've heard of someone using a toilet flange to mount to the filter. 3" PVC or CPVC would have been better than ABS.
never seen a Fernco Elbow?

Message: PVC when it gets hot will give off a gas that WILL KILL YOU! ABS won't till it starts burning, at a temp much higher then PVC burns at.

Message: stop, your making this way too complicated... i've done this simply by getting a piece of 3" diameter PVC for about $4, it will fit inside of that rubber connector tube, a K&N filter will now fit on the outside of the other end of the tube just clamp down on it with the clamp they provide and your good to go, you don't need elbows or glue or anything else... i got a pic at http://mark-world.com/dakota maybe that will help you
