Message: I bought a 92 Dakota 3.9 4x4 last summer - winter is here. I seem to have a problem getting into 4 hi - the light comes on, but I do not believe I'm getting front axle engagement all the time. The light stays on when I shift back into 2hi. Could this be a linkage problem - I'm sure it went into 4x4 mode a couple of times. Thanks for any thoughts.

Message: on the front axle housing is a vacuum diaphram on the left side[pass]that engages the axles.
this will have two vaccuum lines and a two wire plug.4 nuts hold it on.
under this unit is a coupler that locks the axles in and out.
remove this unit, leave the lines on,have someone shift it in and out of 4x4/2x4 high as you watch to see if the shifting fork is moving fully
if it is then its working properly
the switch for the light may be sticking on,the switch is the one with the two wires

Message: The linkage and shifter may need to be lubricated
The best way to do it is remove the boot in the
cab and just soak it with oil. 10-30 or what ever
you have WD40 will not cut it.
When mine got stiff it would pop out of low range
and just a bitch to shift.

Message: Same here on my '93. I had to replace the bushings in the linkage and reset it properly. The bushings were so worn it wouldn't get into either 4H or 4L, one or the other.
Once you shift back into 2H. Put the truck in reverse and back up a few feet, It will disengage the front axle.
