Subject: Tranny questions IP: Logged
Message: I had a '93 2wd dakota given to me. Its got the 3.9 with an auto. The catch is the tranny is shot. I've already picked up a new one, but was wondering what else I should replace while I have everything apart? Any hints or tips would be appreciated as well, thanks in advance. Oh, one other thing, when I install the tq converter how much fluid should I put in?

Message: Put in as mouch fluid into the torque convertor as possible without overfilling. Let it sit for about 10 minutes on its side to allow the fluid to go down in. Ususlly 1 quart of fluid is good.
Also, depending on how bad your tranny went, it may be a good idea to either replace all transmission coolers (radiator $$$) or totally bypass the radiator with a aftermarket transmission cooler. DO NOT REUSE YOUR OLD COOLER> transmission fluid is a detergent and when heated up and running your new trans with fresh fluid through a scuzzie cooler, the old remains that were crammed in your passages will finally release and cause problems with your new trans. They sell cleaner kits to run through the cooler lines before trans install, but the only thing that cleans them good is hot clean trans fluid, So I recommend replaceing your cooler.
