Amsoil Guy & Where are the Comparison Charts
IP: Logged

Message:

Andy,

I just got back from visiting my folks for Thanksgiving.

The quick answer ... Since there are so many oils in the marketplace, Amsoil can not list every competitors oil in one catalog or on the back of every bottle. Amsoil rotates the comparisons, so if you don't see it in this catalog ... you might see it in the next catalog.

Looking for anything in particular?

Maybe I can help.

FREE Amsoil Catalog Request
IP: Logged

Message:

Josh,

Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

For everyone else, ... it takes approximately 7 - 10 business days after you make your catalog request to receive your FREE Amsoil Catalog. If for any reason you do not receive your catalog within this time, please contact me and I will send you another catalog. Sometimes clerical input errors are made, or I don't have sufficient information (sometimes people forget to give me their last name, zip code, etc.).

Amsoil Four Ball Wear Test
IP: Logged

Message:

Andy,

I just got back from a four day trip and have lots of emails to respond to and lots of Amsoil catalogs to get into the mail. Here is a quick answer.

The ASTM 4172D, Four-Ball Wear Test is designed to evaluate wear protection under conditions of sliding friction and boundary lubrication. It does give you a general idea of how the oil will perform with regards to valve train protection, (i.e. rates of iron wear, etc.). The four-ball wear test, the Falex test, and others are used to determine the friction and load properties of an oil before it is run in engine (sequence) tests.

The four-ball wear test does not tell how well an oil will last (i.e. hold up in an engine). However, the test does mean something, ... it tells you something about how an oil will protect in specific friction conditions. But it should never be used as the ONLY reason to pick a motor oil. Just one of the reasons.

If you look at ALL the published literature, most four-ball wear tests yield about 0.35 to 0.55 for most PAO/Ester libricants (i.e. TRUE 100% Group IV / Group V Synthetic Oils).

Amsoil uses the ASTM 4172D test as a screening tool when evaluating new additive chemistries. If an new additive package performs well in the Four Ball test, then it's a promising candidate for further development. At that point they might choose to blend up a small batch of the new oil and bench or field test it in some engines.

A much better example of Amsoil's performance are the results of their 10w-30 in the triple length Sequence IIIF test, which is posted on their website. The Sequence IIIF test is a tightly controlled engine test, that uses the 3.8L GM, V-6 engine found in the Buick Regal, Buick Park Avenue, etc. This is a high temp/high load test and is a key part of the API SL and ACEA test specifications. It is most certainly not a bench test in the respect that evaluating flash point would be. The oil ran for 240 hours and still passed the test limits for an 80 hour test. Amsoil 10w-30 also shows less piston varnish and a lower rate of cam/lifter wear.

Amsoil SAE 5w-30 (ASL) -- Extended Oil Drains
IP: Logged

Message:

Okay, Let's compare these:

Amsoil 5w-30 (ATM)
Amsoil XL-7500 5w-30 (XLF)
Amsoil SAE 5w-30 (ASL)
Amsoil Series 3000 5w-30 (HDD)

Amsoil SAE 5w-30 (ASL) is Amsoil's recommended 5w-30. The ASL (and ATM) products are both PAO/Ester based 100% full synthetics designed for 25k mile extended drains. The Amsoil XL7500 (XLF) uses a Group III base oil and is designed for a 7500 mile drain and is API approved with the starburst (designed for the "quickie lubes" and those customers concerned with warranty issues). Amsoil Series 3000 (HDD) 5w-30 is their series 3000 Heavy Duty Diesel oil, and is designed for 35k drains, and it can be used in gasoline engines too.

I use Amsoil SAE 5w-30 (ASL) because I think it is Amsoil's best oil --- per used oil analysis --- and for the money.

For anyone using Amsoil Extended Oil Drains:

I try to be very clear when talking about extended drains. 10,000 mile oil change is absolutely possible. Up to a 25,000 mile interval is possible under certain conditions, but please read further for additional information. But the KEY here is that --- The 3,000 mile recommendation is overkill, especially with superior synthetic oils.

I know it's hard to believe, but there are a few things that I would like to clarify. Amsoil has been in the oil industry for 30 years. Due to Amsoil's superior synthetic composition and advanced performance additives, AMSOIL performs much longer than do conventional petroleum and other synthetic motor oils. No other major oil manufacturer matches AMSOIL's 25,000-mile or one-year drain interval recommendations (whichever comes FIRST, changing the filter every six months).

However, the 25,000 mile /1 year that is on the back of the bottle is NOT an absolute! One must realize that is for non-severe service (highway miles where you have stable operating conditions) and that the indicated drain interval also has a time period of 1 year maximum as well.

***** READ THIS PLEASE EVERYONE*****: Under a combination of city and highway circumstances, AMSOIL recommends up to 2 or 3 times longer, it means up to 2 or 3 times the equipment manufacturer's recommendation (If your owners manual states 3k miles , then you can change at 9k, and if your owners manual states 5k then 12-15k changes would be alright based on driving habits ... the harder you drive, the sooner the change). Proper filtration is also very important. AMSOIL SDF Oil Filters must be changed at least every 6 months regardless of miles driven.

Notice: Modifications to engine will change service intervals.

Notice: More frequent service may be required under severe service operating conditions.

Notice: For drain interval beyond 3x manufacturers recommendations (especially the 25k change) --- regular oil analysis is recommended for establishing drain intervals.

AMSOIL --- 30 years of manufacturing oil and mountains of data and tests make these clains possible.

Let me know if you need additional information.
