This one is really a mystery... I'm working on an 87 dakota 3.9, carburated. The vehicle stalls sporadically. It happens anywhere from after a few minutes, to after an hour or more of driving. Once it stalls, it can start again in anywhere from immediately, to an hour or more. Following is a list of all the things done to date: 1) Fuel system - dropped tank and cleaned, installed new pick-up sock. Blew air thru fuel lines from tank to pump and from pump to carb. new fuel pump. new fuel filter. pulled top of carb. & cleaned minor sediment. ran truck with gas cap off. 2) Ignition system: replaced ECU, replaced distributor 1 time. new cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. new coil. Ran straight 12 volts from battery to coil. 3) Exhaust: pulled and checked catalytic converter.

This has really got me going in circles. I have read previous posts about similar problem, and all of the answers have either been tried, or don't apply . There is no ballast on the firewall, and the distributor has been replaced (regarding possible hall effect issue) Anyway, there is no hall effect on this distributor.

ANY suggestions that bring a new idea would be greatly appreciated

when it does this have you check for fire at the coil[pull coil wire from dist cap]and have some one turn the motor over while you hold the wire end about a 1" from ground you should see fire jump the gap between the wire and ground.

sound like its the coil or the coil pick-up in the dist.

also check for gas at the carb, remove the breather from carb and look down the carb throat and move the accellarater back and forth, you should see gas squirt.[when it stalls again]

I have had the same problem with my 87 3.9 for THREE years! I have not been able to find a resolution. Please let me know if the new carb works, I have mine rebuit by one of the best in my area and it had no effect. I am about ready to drop in V8 out of desperation..

I have the same problem with my 92 V6... I've been doing research and this seems to be a common problem. I do however have throttle body injection and I'm not sure if the difference is teribly relevent to the problem in this case... two success stories, I have thus far found, to this problem are a tune up(which you've more than done) and replacing all the vaccuum hoses... it's worth a shot and new carb is not cheap. Good Luck.

do let us know what the conclusion is if you find one...

also try the computer, it's cheaper than a new carb... also maybe there's a rare chance that the distributer pickup is defective $40 or so for a new one... it's worth a shot... I'm still researching for my answers...

Try having the EGR valve changed along with cleaning the port for the valve on the intake manifold. My 95 dakota suffered from a similar problem (only in cold weather, mind you). The port was almost blocked solid, and so far the the truck is running great. Hope this helps!
