Subject: timing chain replacement question

Message:
I'm gonna replace the timing chain soon. Should I go ahead and replace the waterpump as well?

Figured I would since it's got to come off.

Thanks,
Daveo.

I would, here are all the part #'s for the job
except the water pump.

The tensioner will keep the chain from slaping
against the cover and making noise like all the
3.9's develope after 10 to 20,000 miles.

When I had my timing chain replaced I also had the water pump replaced. I figured that with my luck I'll get 1,000 miles down the road and the pump will puke out on me. It has to be removed so what the hey. It was only an extra $50 or so. I think you are going in the right direction with the pump replacement as you're describing. Just my two cents.

I would suggest also changing the bypass hose. It is bear to get to and would be a pain if you got it back together and it was leaking.

I just had this job done to my '93 and I had a new pump put on too. Its cheap insurance. We also changed out the waterpump bypass hose and the lower radiator hose--more cheap insurance. Also a new serp. belt. My serp. belt tensioner was sticking so we put a new one of those on too....I don't believe in waiting for things to go bad when they can be changed easily. Total cost of all these parts with timing chain and chain tensioner was not more than 200 bucks. My truck gained in the "reliability" department
