Im currently getting about 15.5mpg in mostly city driving. My truck is an 04 club cab 4x4 with a 5 speed manual(550 miles on it).The truck performs well and can get up to speed fast when you need it to. If the engine has one downside it is that it has almost no low end torque. The engine really doesnt come alive until 2k but above that its great.

The 3.7 reacts the same way to a bigger throttle
body as the old 3.9
If you look on the body there is a # stamped on
it. in the 4.7 upto 02 they ran a 65mm in 03 they
went to a 68mm to improve performance on the 4.7
I don't know if you would want to do that at this
point with so few miles but a bigger TB is an
option.
We have upgraded a few 4.7's this way and the
resaults were very good.

I have a 2004 Quad Cab 4WD 5sp. 3.90. I am getting 19.5 in mixed driving, about 70% highway. I have 2000 miles on it. Power is good. Low end torque is good in my opinion but power really doesn't come on till higher RPM.

Speaking of burnt rubber, can the 3.7 auto squeal the tires from a stop? My 3.9 can only in the right conditions.

Wierd my 94 ext dak will squeal tires if i put 3/4 pedal into it.
But its not quite stock!

I've got a 97ext cab,75K miles, 4X4, 3.9, auto, 3.93s with welded diff, streight pipe, 13" round air cleaner. Does donuts all day long and lights em up straight line with no problem. Tires are still new also (for the time being)!!!

I think that's your 3.92 gears in combo with your other mods, just a guess.
Mine has 3.55 gears (2X4) and 29.1" tires, but they are built to grip the road better than 4x4 tires. My tires near rain: might as well walk, I'll get there faster.
But back to my original question before I fall into complete denial, does anybody know if the 3.7 is competent right off the line?

Mine is a QC 4x4 5sp 3.90 265(31")tires. With the 5sp it is quick off the line, quick up through the gears and will accelerate in 5th gear (unlike the 3.9). Is it fast,no. Is it as fast as a 4.3, yes. I did not buy it to race but to be capabile on and off road, at this it excells.
There is some guy out there in an old Chevy that is waiting to blow you away not matter what newer truck you have.

Well i have to agree on that part my 4th gear in my auto has a problem accelerating since the third gear doing about 4900 rpm shift at about 94 m.p.h. and the governor set at like 98 or 99.

Johnny, redirect and extend windshield washer lines to rear wheel wells, aimed at tires. When you want to burn out, hit the washer.
Mike, just think what if you could rev to 5500.
No fourth gear would be necessary!
I did not intend to offend 3.9's above when referring to 5th gear acceleration. In my experience (with heavier 4WD Dakotas) the 3.9 was flat at low to mid rpm in 5th gear, the 3.7 is not as flat.

I was wondering why my Dakota automatic wouldn't get past 98-99. I figured that there just wasn't enough power. It shifts to OD (4th?) and does nothing.

I have a 97 3.9L reg cab short bed with 3.92 gears. I have no engine mods done to it and it won't break lose if I just punch the gas. Sometimes with the right conditions it squeals. Can anyone tell me what some of the quicker,easier,cheaper mods are that would give me some good horsepower increase and better throttle response?

That kinda surprises me, "Still looking 4 a mod so I can break the tires loose from a stop." The Liberty with the 3.7 can spin 'em for a long ways. Maybe the Dakota is just that much heavier.
