Subject: Oil Filter Stuck IP: Logged
Message: I thought that I'd see a post or two regarding frozen/stuck oil filters, and coming that way from the factory. I have a bud who has a Jeep Liberty with the 3.7, and right now it's sitting in his yard because he's got a stuck filter. He punched a screwdriver through it trying to get it off, and his oil has drained out. So, he can't drive it.
What's the best way for him to get his filter off? He says that there isn't enough room for him to get a strap wrench in there to get leverage on it.
Ideas, guys? Anybody know of a Jeep web site similar to this one?

Message: Actually, he says that this is his first oil change, and he figured he'd do it himself. Apparently, it came from the factory with it tightened down pretty hard.

Message: If he already tried the screwdriver thing then he is almost out of luck. If you ever do get it off check to see if they cross threaded it. Some of these newer vehicals, they make them so fast no one really cares as long as they reach their monthly quota. They will just throw parts on the darn things. A friend of mine bought a Dodge Ram and was driving it off the lot when the oil presure dropped and every light imaginable came on. What had happened was that the factory had not tightned the oil filter and it lost the seal (or never had it). Needless to say he got a new motor, no questions asked. You could try to heat the thing up somehow and make the metal expand, this ought to loosen it a little. Probbly not feasable, but what the heck...

Message: If he cant get a strap wrench up there how'd he get the screwdriver in there. Try one of those tools that goes over the base of the filter. Other wise just put both hands on it and twist like an SOB with a piece of that no slip material used to get jar lids off. if that doesnt work I dont know what to do.

Message: DID THE SCREW DRIVER JUST TEAR THE FILTER APART OR WHAT? IF IT DID THEN HE HIT IT IN THE SOFT SPOT.
TELL HIM TO TRY IT SOME MORE WITH MORE FORCE OR LET YOU TRY IT OUT SOMETIMES IT TAKES SOMEONE ELSE TO GET THE DANG THINGS OFF. LOL
OTHER WISE THEN THAT TRY THE BOTTOM THING LIKE SAID BEFORE THAT SEATS ON THE BOTTOM SO YOU CAN PUT A RATCHET ON IT.
CAN GET THEM FROM I AM SURE ANY PARTS STORE

Message: You might try a hammer and chisel. I got one loose this way. you have to be careful that you are working on the filter base not the block.

Message: I use a pair of wide jawed pliers tocrimp the filter then turn it loose, has always worked for me. If that dosent, them a hammer and chisel are in order as mentioned above, if there is enough room to work. It sounds like someone a t the factory forgor to put a slight bead of oil on the rubber seal. I had a friend who forgot to do this and he had a devil of a time getting it off.
