Message: Hey larry I have a 87 3.9L. After it sits up for about an hour I have to press the gas pedal to get it to start up. but if I am just at the store of somthing for a couple of minutes, it will start up without me having to push the gas pedal. All I have to do is just push it to the floor and let it go before I start the truck. Is it my carb. And another thing when the engine is cold my timing chain knocks more than when the engine is warm. When it is cold you can feel it knocking in the steering wheel when you put it into gear( its an automatic). If you can help me I will be very thankful.
Thank in advance

Message: Sounds like the gas is flowing past the needle and
seat, they wear out and leak, replace it.
You may have to buy a whole rebuild kit to get
a new neddle and seat.
Flooding the motor out holding the throttle wide
open alowing more air will clear this and start
I bet it runs bad and smokes for a little while
after this happens
Sounds like its time to replace the timing chain

Message: Oh yeah I forgot to tell you I have 220,562K Miles on it. If you don't mind can you tell me how can I get to my odomerder I need to set it at 220,562. Why? Because When it have about 30,000 miles on it the odormeter froze and my grandfather drove it for about 40,000 miles before he had the odormeter replaced. I want to set it at 220,562. One more thing, After the timing chain is warm it run pretty smooth. I do a lot of highway driving. I am 25 and I am in technical school( I have little money right now. Is it leaking gas, Does this effect my MPG.

Message: Yes it will effect gas mileage a lot.
The timing chain on all the 3.9's make noise and
you should consider replacing it soon. They usualy
go out 150 to 250,000 miles so if you don't beat
it to hard it can go a little longer but one never
knows for sure
