Subject: Oil smell?

Message:
Why does my oil smell likes it burnt or something? I change it every 3 or 4 thousand miles and there is a strong smell when I check the levels or take the cap off even well before the reccomended change interval. Seems to get a dirty black very quickly after oil changes. I have been running Mobil 1 for about one year (18,000 miles) or so and conventional oils before that. The truck has 81k miles on it now and it is a 1999 3.9L. I can't recall for sure if it smelled like this before the change to mobil 1 but I am leaning towards yes but maybe just worse now. Is there a poosibility that I am getting fuel in the oil?

Here's the solution...

For the next month, change the oil and filter every 500 miles. Use Castrol Synthetic 10w30. Use a Fram filter. Tighten the filter 5 full rotations (this is important). Before filling with oil, check with dipstick 7 and a half times. Once this is complete you must drain your gasoline and replace with fresh. Flush your radiator AND replace air filter.

This is pretty much a guaranteed fix to your problem!

Hello? Anybody home? Am I looking at a rebuild soon? Should I sell it to the next sucker? I am looking at having to replace the fan clutch if I keep it and likely balljoint and rotor time since they are all original.

daddio,

The gas mileage has dropped from about 16.5 to 15.5 mpg pretty consistently recently. I am also thinking the original plug wires, cap and rotor need to be replaced as well as the o2 sensor (truck has about 81k miles). The plugs were changed just very recently when I had the tranny serviced and I did pull them out to look at them a week ago and they appeared to be okay although the insulators had not developed a tan color whatsoever.

I looked down the throttle body maybe 6 mos ago when I was cleaning it and saw maybe a misting of oil but not anything real heavy. The engine does not ping but I think the dealer flashed it or changed the belly pan gasket under warranty years ago but I can't find the paperwork so I don't know which one they did if either but it used to ping like a mother but not anymore although it is pretty gutless.

Could it be the sludge in the engine that is still making the oil dirty and smelly or is it possible to be getting fuel in the oil. From what I read I don't think there is any coolant getting in there. This is a 99 model engine. Thanks for any replies in advance.

The recomended O2 replacement is 60 to 80,000
and will affect gas mileage.

It is also recomended that you use some engine
flush before going to synthetics if its a sweet
smell it probably is carbon deposits slow being
softend and mixing with the oil and giving it
the black color.

Agree w/Larry. You probably had excessive sludge build-up from the Dino Oil. The Synthetic is breaking down the sludge & mixing causing the disturbing color & Odor.

My recommendation: Cheap Filter (Fram Orange), and 4 Qts generic Oil & 2 cans of Engine Flush. Follow instructions on can, add 1 can to existing oil & then drain. Change Filter, re-fill with cheap Oil, Drive for 1 day, add 2nd can of flush (Follow Directions). Drain, Change Filter & Refill w/ Mobil 1 Synthetic & use a good Filter (Fram TG or better).

Good Luck,
Shank

Thanks Larry and Shank,

That makes sense to me because a mechanic told me I had excessive sludge build up when he changed out my rear main seal about 40k miles ago. I have ran an engine flush twice though. Once before I made the switch to synthetic and another one before my last oil change a week ago. I can't recall the brand I used but it said run for 5 mins without driving prior to change and thats what I did ( one bottle each time). I guess its possible I have a lot of sludge to still get rid of I am just hoping I don't develop any leaks now. Thanks again.

Few minor leaks I can deal with as long as it's not the Valve seals draining Oil into the valves.

You will know if this happens because 1st couple seconds after you start your cold engine it will smoke.

Which could also be caused by a bad bellypan gasket.. But you said it was already replaced.

I think my truck might be doing something similar. I think it might be burning oil but there isn't any smoke. I just changed the oil last monday, so I'm going to read the dipstick tomorrow to see if it dropped. The funny thing is the smell isn't that of burning oil. It's much sweeter, almost like that smell Burger King has when you drive by. You can only get it in whiffs too, never prolonged. Almost as if it's an outside oder, yet I get in enough random places to suggest it's my truck.

I just did change to a synthetic blend on my last oil change. Could the dissolving sludge be causing this odor? The other strange thing is I notice it more with the fan running and the heat on. Sometimes I just think I'm imagining it, as my old car died on me and went through a host of strange smells before kicking the bucket. So i'm pretty sensitive now to engine smells. That and I live in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Pull the radiator cap and smell your antifreeze. Seriously. You may be smelling a minute leak in the Heatercore. Thats the only thing I can think of that might smell sweet. Good Luck
