Subject: Airaid kit - water injestion IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone know how water effects the wear of a K&N or Airaid filter setup? I just installed an airaid system, and during the past couple of times I have driven it in the rain the filter element seems to be getting wet. For that matter, has anyone encountered problems with this setup when it rains, does it injest more water than is good for the motor? Is there a way to mount a guard to protect the filter element? Thanks...

Message: Well if you get enough water in it, I was told by my grandpa about hydrostatic lock or something like that... cuz you bring water into your intake and since water isn't combustible, when your pistons compress it, they just lock up since no combustion takes place. Don't know if that can happen, but I'm sure one of the Dodge gurus will be able to tell ya.

Message: hydrostatic lock up occurs when you submerge a motor... hell, we have even done that and kept it from happening.
if the motor had enough vacuum to suck up water through your filter (which i doubt), it would be so thin that the heat of the motor would evaporate it before it could do any harm...
just think of water injection.

Message: Oh duh... now that I think of it, that conversation wasn't about normal automobile engines. It was from when I was talking about driving my four-wheeler in our waterhole and he warned me about hydrostatic lock-up.

Message: I cant count on both hands how many times my 4 wheeler has been hydrolocked....Pull the plugs, crank her over a few times, put the plugs back in, and drive off....No big deal

Message: Well, thanks for the assistance, on the four-wheeler question, now that I think of it, we have actually floated them across rivers and they do restart eventually. You just have to take the plugs out and wait a few minutes. You guy's must be from the south, every Yankee I talk to says ATV.

Message: yeah we sunk my brother's Chebby 4x4... he decided that he needed to try to cross the trinity river after about 5 inches of rain came down in one night. Needless to say, even though his dash sits above any normal persons head... the water was going over it (and we got pix :-D).
had a wrecker pull it out the next day, removed the sparkplugs and crank her over... pretty neat what 12:1 compression does to water.

Message: Sounds like a real fiasco, though I would have loved to see what that motor did to the water. When we floated our 4-weelers it was kind of by accident. I was working with my crew and it started to rain hard. The stream we had crossed truned into a river. Needless to say that we started to cross it and the bottom dropped out. Next thing I know me and a buddy are free of our rides and the 4-wheelers are floating upside down and moving downstream. They finally stopped about 10 feet away, I finally was able to stand up and wade to shore. The boss was not happy since they were company vehicals.

Message: Ed,
Actually I'm a Yankee from Ohio =P
I have always called em four-wheelers... if I say ATV to sound more "formal" I just get asked what ATV means. lol. I guess thats what ya get in the hick towns up here.
Well even though this is a dakota board at least now I know if I ever hydrolock my four-wheeler, I won't have to take it in to the shop to get it running again.

This is a link explaining hydolock. It can cause major problems. My friend had this happen on his S-10 with a cold air intake. Hope this helps.
